This is such a good thread. Great Misti1 that your going to get a rescue. I'm considering the same over here, going to the local animal shelter (they euthanize). But I may have to go to a Yorkie Rescue, or maltese. I don't care about what breed I adopt but it hit me that everyone in my house has allergies. And I'm not getting one to go outside. Now I understand having to pick a breed (I've often wondered why people get put on waiting lists, I know alot is preference) I'm rambling lol Good luck in getting one, I hope you get approved quickly. |
Susan I am not planning to adopt, just be a foster Mom to ones who need to be socialized or if the shelter is too crowded. They will come and go (Ithink, unless I fall in love or something). |
Deana, thank you so much for posting such good information and it is apparent that you have done quite a bit of research to help make it easier for all of us who care to get involved. I have been involved with rescue in the past, but have had to slow down due to illness, but I would love to do so again and will talk with dh regarding how much we can both handle at this time. I would love to foster again, as it was one of the most rewarding times of my life. Of course, you are helping the animal in question in so many ways, but how it enriches your life is priceless. We do donate in other different ways and also have donated our time at shelters too. One of the things I think most everyone can do is to begin to actively go to tag sales ( garage sales ). We have found blankets, towels, clean pads, beds, toys and food and you would not believe how little is asked for such items and if you mention that they will be donated to rescue... many times they are offered for free. I know that this is just a small portion of ideas, but if we all work together it can make a huge difference. Thank you again! |

Last year i donated 50 Hand crocheted(by me) cat toys to a local Shelter ! I hope the kitties are enjoying them Mine do ! |

Hey I never thought about going to garage sales for things and while at it we could pass out some fliers that would also show them what they can do to help. I am sure some people won't appreciate it but a lot would. We should all keep some fliers in our purses in case the oppurtunity arises like the local grocery store if they have a bulletin board, the vets office etc. I agree that we get as much out of giving and helping these dogs and rescues as they do in receiving. That was so nice of you to start this thread to remind all of us of some of the things that we can do to help out shelters/rescues. :star: :smile: I volunteer @ my local Humane League on Saturdays. A couple of hours in the morning. I also donated 2 dog crates that my two outgrew to a local rescue. It makes me feel good to do this for the homeless animals. :) |
what a great thread! We have a wonderful no kill shelter - kind of on the small side, in part because of the lack of volunteers and money. One of their big money makers is a resale shop. The shop is located in a former men's shop with 2 floors in an older strip mall. It is really on the large size and they take donations of all kinds. It is across town, but I try to stop in occasionally to see what they have or to donate something. It is amazing to see how many brand new items get donated there.
