Oprah show puppymills some of the worst are the of Amish Lancaster PA.. some of the worst puppymills... Did anyone here the man that was picking up these dogs telling how they debark the dogs..by putting a pipe down the throat and hitting with hammer...NO ONE SHOULD BE MAKING A LIVING BREEDING DOGS OR CATS IN THIS FASHION... Puppymill people treat the dogs as a commodity like pigs and chicken... They have no feeling for the dogs they are just $ signs!   There needs to be a law to prevent the sale of dogs in this number from any one breeder or person.. Then also the dog auctions should be outlawed as well... How awful.. Makes me chringe... They bring breeding dogs in by the semi load and auction them off to mills....   |

Amish We used to live close to a number of Amish farmers in Maryland..people have the mistaken idea that because they are "religious" people, they are above abuse...NOT so! Once I saw how they treated all their farm animals, I refused to buy so much as an apple from any of them at the Amish market...I have seen some terribly abused dogs, ducks, horse, chickens at the hands so-called "plain" people.... |
This thread strikes me as hateful. I don't like it when one group is selected like this. It's not important that they are Amish; you could call them Pennsylvania farmers couldn't you? Do all Amish people run puppymills? I just don't see what their religion has to do with anything. |
we have a lot of Amish folks here in Wisconsin and they don't run puppy mills, that I'm aware of. The ones I've come into contact with are quiet, wonderful people |
Every time I go to a dog show in PA we drive the PA turnpike and I always sit and think when I see those farms on the sides of the highway how many of them are puppy mills. Im not the driver so I have alot of time to sit and ponder and it always makes me real saddened :( |

OMG.. this is horrible. I couldn't watch the show but I'm so glad that Oprah brought awareness to this horrible problem. My brother-in-law has bought 2 Yorkies from someone that didn't breed the dogs so I'm sure they came from a puppy mill. Even though they're AKC, they don't look like full Yorkies. They almost look like they have Silky somewhere in the bloodline. |
Amish I know these people...they think very different about animals. All animlas are considered livestock and treated as such. I spent so much time with the Humane Society trying to educate the ways of humane treatment..only to be laughed at for considering a dog any different then a chicken...and laughed at even worse for caring about a legless chicken left to die slowly... OF course, not all Amish are millers...but 100's are and religion has nothing to do with it or they would abide by the scripture and treat animals as God purposed...I have heard so many people say..."Because the Amish are such a religious, peacful sect they could not possibly abuse animals" ...I have seen long coated dogs who have NEVER had a bath or groomed...they were one solid mat, unrecognizable....eyes matted shut and blind..I cut these people no slack!..and believe me they hate animal lovers with a passion...I have been on the end of their hate. |

but I did watch the show and I can assure you that they did specifically say that the Amish community makes up a large portion of the puppy mills..and several of the clips they showed were from Amish mills. Although there are plenty of puppy mills that are not Amish....They did specify that the Amish community believes that People are above animals and that people should dominate over all animals. That can be taken several different ways...but the evidence was there showing that it is believed that animals should not live with humans...period...and that dogs are nothing more than livestock and should be treated as such. it's very sad! |
Amish Here is the misunderstanding IMO...Amish is a way of life..many have told me they are not regilious, they do not attend church or read the bible.. but they are members of the Amish community..so I do not feel it is picking on a religion...religion has nothing to do with this abuse... |

Amish I understand it being a religion to many in the Amish communtiy..but not all. My husband had several Amish men who used to come and do work for us..one built a shed and was very friendly..he drove a pick-up and used electric tools...he said not all in the community adher to the religious aspects of the Amish way of thinking..but he and his family were still very much Amish and lived in the Amish community. I asked him how he was treated because he used electricity and drove a truck...he said it was not a problem unless he encouraged others to do so..and it was necessary for his business. ..and it is very true if you LEAVE the community, you are no longer accepted...we were told it was a way of life...you can take your regilious beliefs with you anywhere you go..but it is very hard to live the Amish way of life anywhere but in the actual communtiy ... it was against the law in our county to live in a dwelling without electricity if you had children...and children had to be vaccinted etc etc..this did not apply in the Amish cluster...same for education, medical care for sick children..BUT they said if they left their community, they had to go by the laws..they could not use religion as a reason to not obey the county laws. I do not mean to bad mouth the Amish...as with any group of people, there are good and bad... I will be the first to admit I have met so many abusive Amish people, it is has jaded my thinking...we found a cardboard box of 4 mixed breed puppies left behind a small market by the dumpster...they had no water, it was August 99 degrees and they all suffering heat stroke...when confronted...the market owner said they were $35 and what was not sold would be picked up tomorrow by the trash truck..why move the box twice? The same happened with some dying ducklings...I was asked why I cared about animals..they were meant to suffer for the sake of humans. Sorry, this is long...I will not respond anymore..it has made me relived so many horrible events...I had a night mare last night...I am too old to relive those awful situations...I wish I could erase the pictures from my mind. |
