Letting her run loose To start, I grew up with German Shepards and would always let them run loose (on a field etc) and never worried about them taking off. We had a male Yorkie for 15 years that we had to put down last year and I never let him really run loose. I was always petrified of him taking off. We just adopted a 7 month old female Yorkie and I am looking for some feedback regarding letting her run loose on occasion. Are Yorkies wanderers? Can I expect her to stay close to us and not fear her taking off? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. |
I wouldnt take her off leash. My Jewels stays with us and we would take her off leash. On Halloween we took her off leash with us while My daughter and her friends trick or treated. She did good the whole way but when we were coming home she all of the sudden she went off the sidewalk out in the street right in front of a car. The car didnt hit her but it was a wake up call to me because it just barely didnt hit her. They are too unpredictable on what they will do to take off leash |
Welcome to YT. My little guy would just run off, I think. My husband takes Zoe out and she comes to him when he calls her. He rarely puts her on a leash. I don't take chances and they are both on leashes when they are with me. Hot Rod is 7 mos., Zoe is 3 months. It probably makes a difference if you start the out that way. We got Hot Rod in December so we never really got to take him outside much. |
Mine our only loose in my fenced backyard or the dog park. I just can't risk them running possibly in the street and getting hit or having a bigger dog that's loose grab them. (And I don't even want to think about them running away and not seeing them again.) My two are unpredictable and you never know what might "spook" them. Like kids, sometimes they listen and sometimes they don't. I also live in the city and not the country though. |
That's a great question. I am apprehensive to let my pups run free. It's so sad, I know they love it. I am even uncomfortable letting them run in a fenced in dog park - unless they are the only dogs in it. We have a small yard, so it's not really that big-dog-running-in-the-open-field feeling. ;) |
I would work a lot on their recall first before letting off lead . Once you have great recall then you can let them off lead but I only let mine off in secure areas. |
I don't let Maya of the leash either. I am to scared she might run off ... she does not listen once she is 'sniffen away' outside. When we let her out in the yard she is on a very long leash .... I am not takeing chances with her ! |
I have seen other people who let their Yorkies out to potty in the front yard, and the dogs will go back in the house without a second thought. That being said, ours will disappear without looking back if she realizes that she is free. I would never let mine off leash. She runs so fast and so far that we have spent over an hour looking for her in our neighborhood. I don't know what the difference is. However the people whose dogs go out without a problem have more than one. :confused: |

Reeses doesnt get to go off leash because I tried it a couple times and he would stay with me but he always wanted to puch his limits, but then if anything ever got his curiousity..he would go runnin to check it out. After that...No more freedom! Lol. He has to stay on a leash at all times when we arent inside the house! Welcome to YT!!! |
