How Old We just purchased a female Yorkie to fill the gap left by our 21 year old male. The papers say she is seven months old but the vet says, according to her teeth, that she can't be over four months old. Could the vet be mistaken? |
wow this is very confusing!! i would say that the papers could be wrong, where did you get her?? the vet could also be wrong, but i wou ld like to trust vets. on the + side- wow!! you had a dog that lived to 21? wow he must have lived a very happy healthy life!! BTW-welcome to YT!!! |
It seems like the vet would know because a 4 month old would have baby teeth. A seven month old should have some adult teeth. |
My vet has always told me she can't estimte yorkies age so well because they get adult teeth at different times, not all are the same. When I got Whisper she was going on 6 months and had all her baby teeth in still. She didn't lose them til about one to 1 1/2 months later. (I think can't really remember) You should have a talk with her breeder and ask her question let her know what your vet suspects. Smiles, :) Myra |
I got her from a broker that said the dog was returned to her because a buyer had written a hot check. The vet said the dog had been neglected. She was very scrawny but she is fattening up now. She only weighs two pounds and is very tiny. I really don't care how old she is but I would like to have an idea. And we hope she stays small. |
Welcome to YT & congrats on your new little Yorkie girl. Gee, that is confusing - but like someone else mentioned, I would get back with your broker & see if they can help clear up some of the confusion. Two pounds is little for seven months - but my six-month old Kodah is two pounds, also. I'm sorry to hear that she had been neglected, but I am sure you will give her a GREAT home. May she too have 21 good years! What is her name? Would love to see pictures. (I, too, am from OK & it is way TOOOOOOOO HOT, huh??!!) |
I would go by what the papers say. Chances are, if she's a small one, she won't be as developed as they think. But it is interesting. When you went to purchase her, did the lady have lots of different litters? |
My Polly is five months she still has all her baby teeth, Doc said it depends on the dog and it's size. I was worried about her teeth because the came in later then my other two. Polly is around 2lbs. Maybe smaller dogs take longer to loose there baby teeth. maybe a YT breeder help out. |
I would ask the broker for more information because either one could be wrong...Sailor still had some baby teeth at seven months...while Magic lost all of her's by six months...so I think it depends!!! By congrats on your new little girl... And defintely Welcome to YT....we are glad that you have joined us!!! And we would love to see pictures.... |
The broker is no help. I actually found out why the dog was returned from someone else who knows the broker. By the way we named her Deb's Tiny Bubbles and call her Bubbles. Also the papers say she is black and tan but she is silver and tan. A breeder told me that she could have changed colors after the papers were typed. Just the teeth thing and the broker not telling me everything has me a little suspicious. I just hope she is healthy and happy. Hopefully I can get some pictures posted soon. I would like to take some of her playing in the yard if we ever get some rain so we can have a yard. |
if she is silver, that is a clue that she is older. |
Any vet can be mistaken. Doctors, for animals or humans, are not infallible. |

Welcome to YT. I hope that Bubbles is a healthy little girl. 2lbs is very small, so maybe she is taking longer to developed and loose her teeth. Rini, is a breeder so she has more knowledge than me. |
if the broker isnt very helpful, i was wondering if maybe she said the pup was older so that someone would think that she would definitely stay tiny if she's 2lb at 7 months and would therefore pay more, than if they were selling a 4 month 2lb pup, that could still have alot of growing left??? just a thought, either way its great that she's now with someone that will love her and look after her! :) |
