Help - strange coughing...what could it be?? So my baby Maximus is four months old and I got him just one month ago. From the first day he had this cough and the vet said to keep on eye on it and gave some antibiotics. Well, his cough persisted for two weeks! So she suspected that it was a collapsed trachea. Suddenly, after two weeks - the cough disappeared! So I figured he must have had some kind of upper respiratory infection. But then this morning his cough came back! He coughs when he wakes up, and was coughing when he was eating. But after some time and during play - no coughing. Could it be a collapsed trachea? Supposedly if it was, he'd be coughing when he's exercising. I took a video clips of it and am linking them here. Please tell me what you think it is...He's had it for a month (including 1 week when it was gone) and I want to make sure he'll get whatever treatment he needs. :( http://www-personal.umich.edu/~choin/cough/ |
Does your baby get the shot for kennel cough? If so, when was the last one given? I asked my vet about this yesterday and was told that you can see symptoms of kennel cough from the shot that start 2 to 10 days out from the last shot. If it's from that it will subside but if it doesn't then it could be a treacha issue. If it's an upper respritory issue you would probably be seeing some other problems as well like runny eyes or runny nose. |
He did have his kennel cough shot but that was over 6 weeks ago. He did have a runny nose the first week, but not anymore. I guess it must be a trachea issue :/ |

Kennel Cough does go away and come back. Trust me when I first got Abby she had Kennel Cough about 5 days after I got her. The vet gave her a series of shots for the next 5 days (Luckily my friend is the vets assistant and she came to my house every night after work to give her shots for 5 days and it went away and reimbursed her for gas tho...) But thank God it went away. I will ask my friend what the shots were. She was only 13 weeks when this happened and she did not get any side effects from the shots. Good Luck!! |
Kennel cough? Did he come from a pet store? Most of those pups come with a difficult strain of Kennel Cough. Hard to get rid of, but not impossible. You have to keep going back to the vet for the antibiotics. It is very contageous to other pets in your house, if you have any. Sue & Cricket |
