puppy coat to adult coat??? are yorkies born with a "puppy coat" that eventually changes to an "adult coat"?? Kash's hair is so hard to manage... it has a very cottony/fluffy texture... it's not silky and smooth like i see on most yorkies... am i just not taking the best care of it?? or will it eventually change to be more managable?? i know i probably sound ignorant or like a bad mommy... but it's hard to groom him everyday, especially with the tangles he gets. i've used conditioners/detanglers, but i can't seem to stop the knots from forming! and i know it hurts him when i brush him because i can feel the knots being pulled even with the right products mixed in. any help?? |
im right with you ive never had a yorkie from a pup so this is all new to us, do their coats change? |
I know that the coat will change from a puppy coat to adult coat but I'm not sure when this happens. My friend's puppy' coat changed when she was about a year old. It went from being cottony, almost coarse, to silky soft! I brush my furbaby every night while watching tv and I use a good detangler. I don't really have a problem with knots but I've kept her hair fairly short. |
When andy's coat was changing it got some bad knots so I finally had to cut it off when he was about 4 or 5 months off. A very good breeder and friend of mine told me recently that it was a blessing in disguise. She says she always cuts her dogs hair she knows se is keeping when they are in that change because it is better for the hair and gets rid of that puppy hair. That will eventually shed out and get caught in the adult hair and make tangle. I'll admit since cutting it it has gotten longer and a lot easier to comb. He is getting that long straight silky hair. |
I am at that point with Diesel right now. I was wondering if I supposed to cut off all the black tips or what. I dont ever see a grown yorkie with black tips, lol. |
I'm having the same problem. My Baby is just over 4 months and his face and back is beautiful and silky but his chest and armpits are cottony and I brush matts every night. I do notice some of the cotton hair in the brush after so I hope soon that it will all be gone. I'm planning on keeping him in a puppy cut so I'm not worried about growing his hair long..so I think we may have to clip him soon. |
I just took Odie to the groomers today because he won't let me brush his cottony coat.. He was looking so terrible so I just decided that enough is enough and took him, he didn't look like a yorkie at all just an orphan  not cool for such a sweetie..lol I am sure he will be as cute as a button once he is all clipped.. Maybe now he'll wear his sweater..lol I will be picking him up soon... pics to follow..:p |
Mine have the same kind of coats now that they did as pups |
We'll all be waiting to see Odie in his big boy hair cut!! |

Puppy coat is a lot different than adult coats. They can change in texture/color up to 2 years of age...and some even up to 3 years of age. What I've found in my dogs is that their adult coat is pretty much in by age 1...just coloring changes some. Now if your dog is a cotton coat, then you'll always have to deal with the tangles and mats. Cotton coated dogs are more difficult to manage and you have to spend more time on them. |

While the coloring of your yorkies coat will change; the coat type will not. There are 3 types of coats, cotton, wooly, and silky, or a mixture. See frequently asked questions: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16045 "The puppies with woolly and cottony coats, although growing great length and heaviness fast, never attain the correct visual colors. Their qualities – thick heavy, downy, and soft – deter or dull any light rays from proper play on the hairs." So a puppy with a cotton coat will never grow a silky coat. There are products that you can use to make the cotton coat more manageable. |

My 3 year old little stud had a wooly thick coat as a puppy and he has a beautiful silk coat now. It started changing when he was about 6 months old and stopped when he was 2. All of our other 4 are cotton and silk mixture but I remember so well and I just saw one our babies we sold 2 months ago...they kind of go through a stage where what they have coming in doesn't look anything like what they have....I'll see if I can find some pics. to show you. |
I battle Parker to brush him every morning and evening. His body hair never mats and has a silky feel to it, and hair coming in is a grayish color. His leg and chest hair, feel likes fluff and mats easy. His topknot is also the grayish color. |
