Puppy Training Help! Hello! I'm new to yorkie talk my little guy was doing so good for awhile using his pee pad and now he'll poop on the pee pad and sometime pee on it but the rest of the time he peeing in spots that go un-noticed.......i really don't want to get him fixed so does anyone have any suggestions for me????:) |
Its very time consuming - but the only way to potty train is to keep the puppy in the same room with you and watch 'em like a hawk. The idea is to catch them in the act and correct 'em. If you can't watch 'em (i.e. brush teeth, wash dishes, watch tv - anything) then put 'em in a crate. My husband and I were very diligent with this process and we accomplished potty training within 2 months (we were prepared to give it 6 mos). I was very pleased with the results. Also, while we were correcting Bailey - I took her paw and hit a service/desk bell on the way out the door- and now she rings the bell when she needs to go potty. We get a ton of laughs with that little trick! By the way - I blocked off the family room and laid blankets down so that I could wash them when she had an accident (to remove the smell). "House Training for Dummies" was a great help with our potty training. I'm not going to tell you it was easy. But is was certainly worth it. I couldn't have done it without my hubby's help. I am sorry you are having such troubles. Potty training takes lots of work and most of all patience. It seems they always know when you are not looking, doesn't it? Keep at it. Eventually he will get it. I agree with the above poster about marking. You may want to try belly bands for when he is out in the house between potty trips. It sure helps keep my sanity! Are you using pads and going outside? Maybe you should concentrate on one and make sure he gets it before starting the other so he doesn't get confused. Mine use both, so it is doable. |
Mozart (10 years old) was very easy back when we crate trained him years ago. He is a bigger size, and we had him from 8 weeks. Emmy had a series of changes before she came to us at 7 months. She lived with 2 owners before she was ours. We do not use a crate with her. She is only 4lbs and has proved harder to train. We tried puppy pads, and she shredded. We changed to reusables. I think she has finally caught on. She is now 14 months. She consistently holds it all night or jumps down from our bed and uses her pads. She goes outside when we take her most of the time or goes on her pads during the day when we are away at work. The poop was much harder to train and took longer. She still has a poop accident here and there, but for the most part, she is pretty reliable. I went back and forth about the fussing. They say not to fuss these days. Back when we had trained Mozart, we had shown him his accidents and lightly used the word NO. I went with the new philosophy and have not fussed at Emmy. It just took time and a lot of dedication, but one week I just felt it clicked. Don't give up. Good Luck!! |
If the pup poops in the house, take the poop with a tissue, take dog and poop outside, put the poop on the grass, point to the pup and say, poopie outside. When training my 2 as we walked to the back door I would say, outside and add the word, poopie outside, or pipi outside. Give treats when he goes on pad or outside - make a big hoorah party out of it. It will eventually click in their little heads. I use bells but I like the other bell the yter mentioned. |
