2 male yorkies = problems? Hi, Hubby and I have definitely decided another yorkie will be joining our household. I miss having 2 dogs and besides that, SoCo clearly needs a playmate, based on his barking at himself in mirrors, running to our shed everytime he goes out (we think he's seeing his reflection and thinking another dog lives in said shed) and wanting to play with us ALL THE TIME. So we had been thinking a girl as that's what we had before, 1 of each, but a) girls are SO expensive b) everything I've read about the girls says they aren't quite as playful (which would defeat the purpose of getting SoCo a playmate) and so independant and less cuddly. I lived the last part with our female sharpei and frankly I don't miss her "leave me alone" attitude that she got a lot of the time. (Don't get me wrong, I'd give my right arm to have her back, but still...) So, does anyone have at least 2 males and a peaceful (as much as possible with yorkies, of course :D) home? We were worried about 2 of the same sex leading to a lot of fighting, but if enough of you say I have nothing to worry about, I think hubby can be convinced ;) Thank you all! Tara :) |
I have two males and thet get along very well, they love to play together,i just got skip in february he was one last month and my kaycee is eight years old and loves him and i also have a girl yorkie abbey kaycees daughter 4 years old and they all play together and love each other. I had my kaycee 4 years and he was so lonely and when i got abbey he was so happy to have a baby to love and i really think he knows abbey is his because he lets her get away with everything, when she was a baby she would hang from his ears. |
I have two boys, it all started off with Chip though. He was a rescue and at the time he finally came to live with me he was around 1 1/2 - 2 years old. After a few months with him I thought he would do very well with a sibling. I took my time looking for one, since I wanted a teapot around the same age, size, tempermant, male, etc. One finally came available on YT, and he sounded like he would fit perfectly with Chip. It's been almost four months and they got along great right from the beginning. I'm so happy they've made such great brothers for each other. Personally I think males are more about love and pleasing you. Females are more moody. |
Thanks for your responses, they are encouraging! I agree grayxie, females are definitely more moody, I don't think that's just yorkies, Tequila, my sharpei could be a real witch when the mood struck! LOL |
I have 2 males and no problems. They love each other. The little one sometimes acts like the brat little brother though and gets on Harley's nerves ;) but I've never had probs with dominence or fighting (they know I am the boss :D ) oh, and I had them both fixed when they turned 6 months. |
We have two males and one female. Everybody loves each other and get alond just fine but Sami our little girl runs the show!:animal-pa |
I'm sad to read such a generalization of female yorkies. All yorkies can be sooo different, one from another, some are friendly, playful, obedient, some are not, whether male or female. I have a girl and boy and the girl instigates play more than Zander, she is very loveable, loves to be on laps, loves people. Zander is a bit more cautious but very sweet. Jazzie was a snap to potty train as well. ;) Wish you the best with your choice. |
I have 2 girls and 4 boys:) they all get along fine:) my little one jaser still has sharing issues, he was my daughters and now mine, so he was use to being alone, now that he has all these brohers& sisters, he has to learn to share;) |
Of course they are all different, male yorkies as well. However, without a crystal ball, I have to rely on generalizations to make a decision. It's exactly the same as deciding on a specific breed. Certain breeds have certain traits and personalities, just like the sexes within those breeds. I don't think it's wrong or sad to make a decision in this way. Heck, if I could "date" puppies like I could men, life would be a lot easier! LOL But I'm of the type once an animal comes in my home, it stays, period. Which is why hubby won't let me foster, because he knows I'd adopt them all. So before I make a 10-20 year decision I'm asking for other people's experiences :) Tara :) |
I dont agree that all females are independent and not playful. My Jewels is very dependent, cuddly and playful. Shes much more cuddly than my male |
The only time my two males don't get along is when one of my girls is in heat. Most of the time even during that they get along. |

Thank you all for sharing your experiences, I think I'm decided on a little boy. Now just have to save up the money and decide on one! Tara :) |
Do you think you will get another teapot like SoCo? |
I'm fairly open, though I would prefer not a tiny. Ideally 5-6lbs and up. Size isn't so important to me, health and a good breeder is. I know exactly who I want my puppy from but I'm not ready yet unfortunately. Of course close in size would be great, they could share clothes... LOL Seriously though, I also worry if SoCo could hurt a smaller pup, but (generally again) I've read quite a few posts saying the smaller dog tends to rule the roost, or hold their own, so as long as we don't get a 2lber I'm sure we'll be ok. Tara :) |
