training older dog Hi everyone, I recently rescued a 3 year old yorkie. His profile said he was housebroken but would sometimes mark his territory. He is clearly not housebroken. I've only ever trained puppies with crates and that worked beautifully but I'm not comfortable crating a 3 yr old who has never been crated before especially since he is in a new environment. I'm desperate because no amount of scheduling, praise, scolding and treats are helping. He is currently wearing a belly belt with a maxi pad in it for peeing that he came with. This morning I got him out early to pee and fed him and went back out with him and the minute he came back in he pooped in the bedroom. Any advise much appreciated. He's been here a week now and we love him but he has to get trained. |
I'm sure others will repond with great advice. The only thing that comes to mind is if you are not comfortable crate training/confining him when you can't be watching him 100% is maybe to leash him to you when you are in the house? I had to do this with once with a rescue in the past and it really did help. Welcome to YT :) |
I have an 11 yr old female that was rescued and not house broken. I had the same problem, she would go outside and go pee on the floor and pooh when she came back in. What I did was pick up the pooh and and paper towel for the pee and put it close to the door. It took a day or two, but she started to go to the same spot where she had already peed, on the paper towel, with newspaper underneath, I kept making the paper smaller, and then took it outside still wet. Everytime I thought she had to go, I would put her outside and she went to the paper until she didn't need it anymore and started going on her own. It seemed to work for me. Basically I kept moving the pee and pooh closer to the door and then out the door until she got the idea that that was were she was suppose to go. Now and then she has accidents but knows its wrong. I make her sit beside it until it gets cleaned up then straight outside again. Hope that helps a little. |
Does anyone know how I should crate JC or if I should at all? I got him when he was 9 months old and he hadn't been house trained. He is neutered, but he still marks around the house. I truly would like to crate him, but will it work? He will 2 in 4 days. The biggest issue I have is that he KNOWS he's not supposed to go inside the house, and he sleeps 8-10 hours without having to go, so why does it happen an hour after he's been out? Yorkie's are sooooo intelligent, they understand they are not to do certain things, yet they do it anyway. I'm in love with him and he's perfect in every other way. I don't know what to do anymore. Thanks, Debra |
My suggestion to you would be to keep him tethered to you at all times and do not allow him to have free roam of your house. Keep the belly band on him and take him out for potty only. You the tethering like you would with crate training a puppy but instead of going into a crate he needs to stay at your side. When you go out for potty, say the command and when he goes praise, treat and immediately back inside. Do not let him wander. Once you are sure that he does not need to potty he can have sort periods of freedom a little at a time. He is only going to potty in the house if YOU ALLOW him the opportunity to sneak off. Also buy more bellyband and they need to be if fashion statement for the long haul. Here is a link the Yorkie Haven Boutique: Belly Bands*::*Yorkie Haven Rescue Boutique If you make a purchase from the boutique all money goes directly to the Haven rescue pups  If it says that something is out of stock just email and inquire.
