New Yorkie Mom, Help ! :aimeeyork Princess Foxy is 5 months old, had her since 8 weeks. She has extremely high energy levels and need some suggestions for behavior training for her. Help. |
What kind of problems are you having? If you give us a little more info, we can give you some pointers. |
Teach her fetch! She gets to learn something and be rewarded and burn energy at the same time! If there is anything else more specific we can help with let us know! |
High levels of energy are very common, especially at that age. I have 1 that is almost 6 months and she still has loads of energy. Lots & lots of different kinds of toys will definitely help. I have several, on all levels of my house but it keeps her entertained during the times I (or the other dogs), cannot play with her. And of course, several walks a day ( or taking her out to play ball or fetch if you have nice yard space) will also help her exude some of that energy. It will soon diminish as she gets older. Hopefully others will come offer other suggestions also. BTW - Welcome to YT!! You will learn lots here. Oh, and I too have a Foxxy!!!;) |
Hi and welcome to YT!:) Oh pups are very energetic. Maxi is 1 year and 2 months and still very very active:rolleyes: What I was doing and still doing is teaching him tricks. I would play and take him for walks that way he burns all the energy he needed to burn. Oh and I also bring him to his girlfriend and they play a lot. Usually after those visits Maxi is sleepy:) |
From Foxy Dear Katie & Maxie, Thanks for your reply....sorry about the delay in responding. Our son & his wife 6 weeks ago had a baby and she was 1 month premature. My daughter-in-law, a teacher, had to return to school to teach and I am the babysitter. Very busy I am now ! I can use all the help you can offer about my precious Yorkie. She has some behavior problems that we just can't seem to have break- thrus in. Thanks, Kathy & Foxy |

Behavior Help! Dear Pricilla80, Thanks for your response. Must type fast, working with 6 weeks old baby....I'm a new first-time grandmother and first time Yorkie owner also. Foxy will be 6 months Sunday and she is very, very active. She loves all of her toys, which are many. We play games with her several times during the day and of course the evening. She is very bad about wanting to chew our fingers during play and coming up and nipping us. I have tried many techniques to stop this, but most of the time, she does stop, but begins again. I have not perfected housebreaking, she uses the pads only when she wants to. Thanks for your advise. Kathy |
My friend, another yorkie owner, gave me this book called "A Complete Idiots Guide to Yorkshire Terriers". It's excellent! It explains the breed from head to tail, inside and out, all about terriers, behavior, training, do's and dont's...etc.. Supposedly terriers are a very active and athletic breed and they require a great deal of supervision. I have a 3 month old an I'm experiencing the same thing you are. The biting and nipping has to stop. The only thing you can really do is reinforce over and over that biting and chewing even during play is a no-no. It gives tips on how to keep your yorkie in check and make sure he knows he isnt the king of the house since this breed tends to believe they are. There are explicit instructions on how to integrate your puppy into your house in the beginning. Most yorkies are hard to train, stubborn and extremely intelligent and require a very large amount of continous attention in the beginning. Check out this book...it's definitely a god-send to me and my hubby. Good luck, HTH!!! |
Hello and welcome to YT congratulations on your Yorkie and on your 1st grandbaby. |
Welcome to YT! It can take a while to train our pups. It take lots of love, patience and repetition. If you keep saying "no bite" and turn away for a few minutes she will eventually understand you will not play with her when she bites. It's definitely time to be teaching her basic commands or how about a puppy class to help her learn her good manners? Do you take her for walks? We take Sass for a nice walk every night to help her get rid of some her energy. |
