Vaccine Dosage Does anyone know if canine vaccines are given by weight or are they just a standard dose for any size dog? I brought Kiki in for her distemper vaccine last week (which she had a reaction to) but I noticed the vet didn't give the entire shot. Last year the vet told me he doesnt' give the entire dose for a small dog. Is it the same actual vaccine for every dog or does a larger dog get two syringes full of medication? Kiki is due for her rabies and bortadella vaccines in the next month. We always space her vaccines out so she doesn't get them at the same time but I still worry. Is there some sort of dosing guideline by weight or does the vet just squeeze in as much as he wants by just looking at a dog's size. Kiki is our first dog so I really have no idea about any of this. There is an excellant thread on vaccines just put up today in breeder talk. I would never just give mine half doses. They aren't at all protected that way. |

My vet gives my girls less than 1/2 dose. The "standard" vaccine is designed for a 25 lb dog (according to my vet). It stands to reason that a 4 lb dog would not need nearly what a 25 lb dog would to be protected. Plus, with all the new information coming out, I'm more and more hesitate to vaccinate at all!! |
Half doses shouldn't be given. What you are trying to achieve with vaccines is to provoke the immune system into producing antibodies. Vaccines are measured by the count of virus cells in them so if you only give half you aren't giving the proper count of virus to provoke the immune system. Giving half doses is like not finishing a course of antibiotics. You may cause more resistant strains to develop. Vaccines do not follow the same logic as medicines. Talk to your vet! Most vets give our tiny ones the same dosage they'd give a 100 Great Dane. Be VERY insistent that you want the correct dosage for YOUR DOG'S SIZE. If the vet won't comply, I'd be quick and fast to find myself a new vet. |

My vet gives half doses and explained that it only will cut the effective rate by 10%..I'm not sure why it was pretty technical explanation..but will lessen the reaction rate signifigantly. My breeder uses this vet and all her dogs have always gotten half doses and been fine. Just my experiece. (1cc is the standard dose for all dogs 20lbs or 120lbs, the vials are single dosage bottles) |

My vet also adjusts the dosage. He says it's safer especially for a 2 1/2 lb dog |
