Help, weight question Hi, My sister is getting a puppy, she's 8 weeks old and is 2.1lbs...can anyone tell me how big she should expect her to get? |
It's hard to say, and there are many weight charts to give an estimate. Some people say take the 8 week weight and triple it. So that would be about 6 pounds 5 ounces. |
I've been told that you can over feed them and they will turn out bigger. I wonder if that is anyone else's experience. The weight charts just don't work out for my dogs. They are always big at birth and for the first 2-3 months and then everything evens out and they are normal size (within 7 lb. limit). |

Hi, I recommend "NOT" going off the charts and instead look at the size of the parents. If you have information about the grandparents and other past generations this will help even more. Some babies grow fast but can also stop fast. Some grow slow, so you just never truly know. My Trixie wasn't an extremely tiny baby and some might have thought she was going to be on the bigger side. She grew really fast but then stopped at 6 months old. I guess I should say she stopped growing in length and height at 6 months but did gain a little more weight. She's now 4-4 1/2 lbs. and both her parents were about this weight and so were the grandparents. However, sometimes you just never know. My one other girl Pia is only 2 lbs. and both her parents were over 5 lbs. When it comes down to it, time will only tell. :) |
To give you an idea but not set in stone, Kaba at 8 weeks weighed 2.2 pounds and she is now 8 months and weighs 4 pounds. I think she should be right around 5 pounds. But time will tell...plus, as she has grown, we've had a lot of fun trying to guess her size. |
I agree that you should look at the parents and ask the breeders expertise on her line to figure it out. My Brooke wasn't even 2 lbs at 5 months old! But she then made it to 3 1/2 lbs now full grown. My other little boy Booboo was so tiny when he was little about 2 lbs at 4 months and then we had him fixed at 6 months and he just kept growing. He is now 10 lbs!! The vet couldn't believe that it was the same dog because he thought he would be 4 1/2 lbs or so!! Some grow fast and others take a while to grow. You have to just love them no matter what size they become!! |
a little more than 6lbs is an estimate |
Thank you everyone for all your help!! I really appreciate it. |
