Strange Problem! I have a problem with Ozzy digging in his food bowls! He always sticks his paws in his food and digs at it and sends it flying out onto the floor then eats it off the floor. He will dig furiously at the bowl and eventually knock it over. They are small stainless dog bowls with a rubber bottom. They aren't to big or to high. I've started to leave a small pile on the floor for him but this isn't really a solution as I don't want to get ants when the weather gets nice. Does anyone else have this problem or suggestions on how to stop it? I free feed him because he is a grazer and won't eat it all at once and I have to leave him alone in his xpen all day twice a week. (he's 17 weeks old) Right now I either put the kibble on the floor or tell him no when he starts digging at it and stand over him..but if I'm not there...kibble everywhere! Help! |
Could he be seeing his reflection? I'd try a different bowl. |
How about trying a paper plate!!! |
LOL! My Jamie did this ALL the time when he was eating kibble and he wouldn't eat all at once either. I switched him to raw a while back and it taught him real quickly that food was only available for 30 minutes 2 times a day (raw can't be left out). Now when I put his food down he gobbles it all up off a plate and I don't have to worry that he's getting enough to eat or counting his kibble. If he is staying with kibble I would definitely suggest a plate or perhaps a toy that you put his meals in and he has to play with it to get the kibble out a few at a time. |
Ohhh wow I think it may be his reflection!!! I'll pick up a non shiny bowl today and try that out. I thought of a paper plate but that would for sure end up as a toy shredded all over the pen. He loves paper and even steals it out of our printer! Thanks for the suggestions :) |
I free feed my girls,, and use the same type stainless bowls,, but have used ceramic as well, no matter what,, Daisy does the same thing,, as if there is the BEST morsal at the bottom,, and that they all taste better off the floor, while the other 2 girls eat nicely from the bowl and dont want to eat off the floor,, I keep a doggie placemat under their food and water bowls and just pick up feed , put it back in the bowl thru the day, ,Daisy is 18 months and still does this daily, Cricket on the other hand will generally move her head/nose as if she is burying the food,, though not touching the food,, she has always done this and she's 27 months,, I say she's trying to bury it and save it for later,,lol:aimeeyork |
maybe I'll try a saucer type plastic plate that has no sides. I kind of have resigned myself to picking up kibble all the time. Pretty amazing how these Babies train us!:D |
try one of those food and water bowl holders maybe getting them off the ground a bit would work. |
Lola does this too. I don't think she likes to stick her face deep down into the bowl. So, I bought little plates in the baby/toddler section of Target. I use them for her wet food and it has been a success. They are dishwasher safe too, which is a plus. But, I still haven't been able to break her of the habit of tossing pieces of kibble around in the air before she will eat it though. :p |
we use a tupperwear clear bowl between washings maybe you could try that |
I think I may try a plastic tupperware lid tonight. Hopefully it won't end up as a toy! |
