Hello, first time dog owner 1 Attachment(s) Hello everyone, the wife and I just recently got our first dog. His name is Max and he'll be 4 months tomorrow. The breeder we got him from already had him potty trained which was a plus for us, however, he has not eaten since we've had him. It's been almost almost 24 hours and he will not eat anything. He won't drink water or eat the puppy chow that the breeder gave us. Is he just scared of the new home? I don't want our new puppy to go hungy. My wife went and bought some puppy milk for him but from what I'm reading we should stay away from the puppy milk. He will drink the puppy milk but nothing else. Any tips or advices on how to get our little Max to eat? I was very sad to leave him at home today, is he old enough to stay home by himself? |
Hello and welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby. He is adorable. I am no expert and you may get some better advice on here but have you considered sitting next to where you keep his food and try hand feeding him a little at a time? I had to do this until my baby was aclimated to where his food and water is. Also, you probably already know this but I have always heard that it is very important in the first few months to leave the food and water in one spot. Anyway, good luck and keep us posted on his progress. |
You really must get him to eat and drink something. If not, he could go into hypoglycemic shock and you could lose him. Try hand feeding him and by this time, since it's been 24 hours since he ate, you should try giving him some karo syrup or nutrical. It's probably due to being in a new home but he simply HAS to eat!! Also, since you just got him, you really need to get him to the vet today. He could have other issues. You can also try moistening his dry food or giving him some canned food. If nothing else, try a little chicken meat or some ham to get him going. This baby has to eat even if you have to force feed him but try your best to coax him to eat. Put him on your lap and try to get him to take something while you hand feed him and call your vet and get him in there. He needs an initial health check anyway but don't wait on that to get him to eat. Leaving a new puppy that isn't eating home alone is not a good idea. I really hope everything works out but this sounds like it could get very bad quickly. keep us posted on his progress. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
Sorry cannot help you out, but just wanted to say hello:) ....and your little one looks just like my Tinkerbell.:aimeeyork Have fun on this fab friendly forum.:animal-pa |
Thank you everyone for the kind words and advices. I will probably head home during lunch and see if he's eaten and if not will try to hand feed him some food. |
Try mixing a little cottage cheese with his food (water the food a bit to make it soft) and put some water in a syringe to make him drink. I'm having to do that right now with my new puppy. Eating isn't a problem, but drinking is. Also, as others have suggested, nutracal. I squirt a ribbon of it on top of her food and she licks it right up! If Max won't do that, let him lick it off your finger. (it's really sticky, so have a washcloth handy to wash his face afterward) If the cottage cheese and kibble doesn't work, try some boiled chicken breast with brown rice. I wish you much luck. He really does need to eat and drink ASAP!!! BTW, Max is a cutie :) |
Good for you. By all means, go home at lunch time and, if possible take the time and get him to the vet. I know we all have obligations but remember he has been taken from the only world he knows and is frightened. For whatever reason, he doesn't feel comfortable or he would have been eating by now. Bonding with a new puppy is critical, some take longer than others. If I'm reading your post right, the poor thing is probably in a weakened state from not eating and now he's in a strange house all alone. I know you want what's best for him but put yourself in his shoes and you can imagine how he must feel. For his health, you must get over this hump with him. Best of luck to you. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
Everyone has given great advice. I just want to say hello and welcome. Max is very handsome... |
You have gotten so great advice, I hope everything works out for Max. Welcome to you!!!! |
Just to give everyone an update, I went home and I wetted his food a little and he started eating. I can sense maybe the food might be too hard for him to chew, so maybe after work gonna try mixing some canned food with his puppy chow to make it softer for him. I also got him to drink water which was great! I can't wait to get home after work and feed him dinner. |
Great news!! Usually once they start eating they should be ok. I would mix the canned in and see if he eats better. He is a cutie and I am so glad you went home and got him to eat and drink. After a few days they settle in and then the fun begins!! |

I'm so happy you got Max to eat :) Usually softening their food is a good way to go. Even our little Peanut that we had, he was atleast a year and half old when we got him and we had to soften his food when he first came to live with us. Whatever way you do it, with water, canned food, etc.., it's so much better than them going hungry. They are so tiny, it's extra important that they eat. I would get a tube of nutrical and keep it on hand. You can buy it at any pet food store. |
Glad to hear you got him to eat,Welcome to YT. |
