frustrated with yorkie owners/breeders I want to have one of my pups become a therapy dog (not a service dog that I can take anywhere, therapy dog to go into nursing homes/hospitals) Anyways in my search for how to do this ect I have come across some yorkie owners/breeders (the conversation always seems to go to how big my mom yorkie is ect) Can anyone answer this for me... Why is it so incredibly bad that I bred my female, who is closer to 8lbs than 7lbs? I hear "that isn't within the AKC standards for yorkies.... they should be between 4-7 lbs" Then I hear about their breeding females and non breeding dogs... and how they are standard. Well if 4-7lbs is AKC standard... then wouldn't a 3lb yorkie be NONSTANDARD? and just as bad as an 8lb yorkie? if you are going by the AKC standards? and what really gets my blood boiling is that some of these "breeders" are breeding Biewers... HELLO- Biewers are NOT accepted by the AKC at all- correct? I mean the AKC gave me papers on my female who was above their standard... but they won't give any paper on a biewer regardless of weight. So why is it so bad that I bred my almost 8lb yorkie, and I can and do have papers on her, when these people are breeding biewers (at 3x the cost of a regular yorkie) who can't even be papered? Does it make sense to you why these people are so put off by what I did, when what they are doing isn't even accepted by the AKC? I love biewers, I will get one someday, when the prices of these "rare" yorkies goes down some... which that makes me laugh also... the same people who are disgusted with my "overweight" female, are just as disgusted with people who say a "chocolate yorkie" isn't rare it is a genetic defect and there for should be cheaper than a normal yorkie, and are disgusted when people charge more for their "chocolate yorkie" than a normal yorkie.... Are they not doing the same thing with biewers? I mean it is a genetic thing as to why biewers are white also... but yet they say they are "rare" and charge 2500 on up for them. These people are so hypocrits in my book. In the end I have decided to talk to "other" dog owners re:therapy dogs.... because they are a lot nicer than the yorkie people. So can anyone answer for me why is it that many yorkie breeders preach "standard" (and look down on me) when they themselves are not breeding standard, and some are breeding yorkies not even accepted by the AKC??? |

You wouldn't hear me giving you grief for breeding an 8lb female if she was a good example in other respects. It's much safer to breed a larger girl to a smaller boy and the pups should mainly range within the standard. I would MUCH rather see that than the poor puny girls some people breed to try to get tinies. I didn't get my Biewers to be a hypocrit, I am just fascinated with the genetics and Love the colors. I think training a therapy dog is a very praiseworthy thing to do, so good for you! |

Welcome!!!!If you have a wonderful Yorkie puppy that you want to train as a service dog, then what others say cannot matter to you. Please read the posts on here about the sizes of our beloved Yorkies. They can be 2 lbs and act like Rotties and weigh8-9 pounds and be lil lap-cushions. I have taken my untrained dogs to the nursing home where I worked while I was still nursing. Not one person said "Oh, look how big THAT Yorkie is!" Do not allow yourself to be discouraged because some thoughtless person gives you grief. Do what you set out to do and only YOU make the decision whether or not you are a success. Best of luck and I admire you for your thoughtfulness and caring. |

i think its fine to breed a female 8lbs. as to my understanding, the AKC will accept a dog above the weight's standard. thats about how big tucker's mom was/is. good luck! and i'm sure the puppies will be beautiful even if they turn out to be a 16lbs!!! |

i would think breeding a almost 8 pound yorkie would be safer than breeding a 5 pound one...plus yorkies are cute no matter what size they are!! |

I am sorry you seem so upset. I am a yorkie owner and my pet, Zowie, has 5 beautiful pups. I would never judge you for any reason, especially not for letting your beautiful girl have babies. I have 2 tiny pups, 2 medium pups and a large boy. I am guessing he will be 8 - 9#, he is still adorable - and I love him, I love them ALL. It has been the greatest time raising them. Today their mom was playing with them out in the backyard. I couldn't stop laughing. They have brought me a lot of joy - I wouldn't let anyone spoil that for me (or you) Try not to let a few people make you think we are all that way. It is not fair. We are loving people and have all different size yorkies. Some have many other types of dogs and cats, kids, grandkids, jobs or not. We are much more than Yorkie Owners. |

My Tiah is about 8 pounds and the sweetest girl I could ever hope for. She is also healthy and an awsome mother to her puppies. I do not regret breeding her in the slightest. I bred her with a male that I don't think weighs 3 pounds soak and wet! |

You wouldn't get no grief from me either. Tinkerbell came from a larger momma as well and is only 5 lbs. Just because your girl is over the standard doesn't mean she can't produce standard and it is safer for her anyway. |

It can be very frustrating dealing with people at times. I had a lady call my Gracie a BIG yorkie and she only weighed 5 3/4 lbs. Anyway, I think that it is great that you are looking into making your baby a therapy dog. I've seen elderly people respond very well to these dogs. :) I would totally disregard what people say about your dog. There is a lady that breeds her 13 lbs yorkie bitch and has beautiful pups that are about 5 lbs full grown. Instead of stooping to their level by making comments about their Biewers (which I am not saying that you have) just smile. If these breeders ask how much she weighs, tell them or not, it doesn't matter what they think. An 8 lb bitch will be able to carry her pups better than a 4 lbs one. |

Hopefully, spending some time on this website will change your mind about Yorkie owners in general. We're nonjudgemental! We love our furbabies, whether they're the size of a golf ball or a basketball! |

I think it's safer to breed an 8 lb girl than to breed a tiny 3 or 4 lb girl. |

I know there are many, many great yorkie owners... and on paper it is easy for me to say what I feel, but in person I just clam up- so I have not said anything offending to any person I visit with about yorkies ect. I usually just smile, but from now on I am not going to get into these discussion about what is standard ect. I have 3 beautiful pups from her, they are 6 weeks today :) and a bundle of joy... I will have to get pics up of them and how they have changed. Thanks for the supportive replies, I reread this post and I did sound pretty snotty, I apologize for that. On a good note, after much searching I have found a good mentor to help me in my journey in training a therapy dog :) have a great weekend |

Yorkie Owners breeders Please do not be upset. Remember the breed standard is a guidline of the perfect yorkshire terrier. The perfect yorkshire terrier- DOES NOT Exist. If a yorkie is over 7 pounds it is called a fault- which means -it does not meet the guidline of the standard of the weight. Nothing more and nothing less. A Yorkie can have a bad bite- undershot or overshot this is a fault also. A Yorkie who has LP has a structure fault. Who is to say which one of those faults are worse. You make the decision. Me, I would rather have a yorkie who is over the weight limit- But that is M/O. I feel that it is very admirable that you want to have a Yorkie who is a service dog. When a person contacts me to use one of my males for stud- I try and look at the whole picture. I try and work with the gal's owner to give my thoughts and suggestions. If the female has no worthy qualities- yes I will say that in M/O the bitch should not be breed. I will point out what I do and do not like about my male. Try to give a educated guess on what breeding the two might produce. You have to make the decision as to why you want to breed and what your intentions are? I have met many a show breeder who has lovely looking dogs but have no personality they are raised in a sterile enviroment- and bred for looks only. I have met the person who breeds because they can- puppies may and may not resemble the breed standard. It is a hard choice. This is why all of our dogs look different. Just look at all the pictures on this site. Do they all look the same? No? They are all YT's but each one has distinctive differences- size, height, weight, coat color, coat texture, facial expression, length, of nose, height of ears, spacing of ears, movement. Until I breed the perfect YT and can produce several more- I am going to try and be understanding of others. Nothing is wrong with stating what the breed standard states- but don't go overboard. Fight the major battles that are of importance. |

Sorry but what is a biewers? As far as weight goes, a lot of people on this site have large yorkies, I'm at a loss as to why the AKC decided the standard when most full blooded yorkies I've seen are larger and a smaller yorkie is even dangerous to breed. I guess is a person is showing/competing their yorkie is tiny? |

First, a Biewer is a yorkie with 3 different colors (white, tan, black) Now, my Bell is also 8 lbs, and she just had puppies. I think she is almost perfect. Yes, she is too tall and is over weight. But her coat is blue/gold , soft and straight. Her head is compact, her ears are not too big or small, and her eyes are small, round and dark. I would say she was very close to standards, except her size. So I bred her to a 5 lb male and hopefully her pups will be her only smaller. But, also like you people give me grief.. :( They say stupid things like Gosh thats no YORKIE, it must be a silky shes to big... Then there are the other stupid people who say things like Gosh what is she?? She can\'t be a YORKIE she isn\'t black!! Unfortunately, there will always be stupid people. So cheer up, I\'m sure your baby is just beautiful, just the way she is. :p |
