Yorkies and Kitties? What is the best way to introduce a puppy to a kitty cat? My kitty is pretty mellow, has been the only pet in the house. Thanks for any help., I have a few idea's on what I am going to try to do but just thought I would throw the question out here if anyone has had good or bad experiences with this. ALso the puppies are raised in a home with a cat.;) Thanks , Lezlye |
I have two kitties and they were both a little over a year old when I brought Bitsy home. Bitsy was 9 weeks old when I brought her home. When I first brought Bitsy into the house, they both came and sniffed her and that was it. They really showed no interest in her. I had Bitsy's area set up beforehand (gated off the bathroom and a hallway for her). To this day (7 months later), both cats still don't want anything to do with her. I think if anything, she stresses them out. Bitsy likes to chase them and bite their ears. My cat KoKo will sometimes swat at her then run off, whereas my cat GiGi will stand there and take it, crying the whole time until I come rescue her or Bitsy lets her go so she can jump onto higher ground. I know Bitsy is just trying to play with them, but she they don't like it. I don't think they're scared of her, she just annoys them. At night, we all sleep together peacefully. GiGi sleeps in my right armput, KoKo is by my feet and Bitsy is usually between my legs or the back of my knee. Sorry I don't have advice to give, just my experiece with my wild kingdom. Good luck and welcome to YT! |
I have a VERY disgruntled angry cat, for 9 years of her life she was an only child. She was not amused when Chip arrived, and even less thrilled when Harley arrived a year later. She couldn't really care less about them as long as they stay out of her way. If they get in her way the claws literally come out accompanied with the angry cat sounds. |
My cats wanted to know what was wrong with just being a kitty house. At best they tolerate the dogs... Now when it was reversed with another dog we had...and brought home kittens...they got along wonderfully. |
Cats I guess I'm blessed with an unusual cat. He hates other cats, loves the dogs, and even plays with them. Cats are cats and one never knows how they will behave until faced with the situation. I have a Bengal. At first I never gave it a thought bring a puppy home until they came face to face, then I went into panick mode and thought oh no these males will kill their own young. But he simply looked down and shuffuled the pup aside and went on. Ammazing. Good luck! |
Oh Thanks Everyone! I sure hope I don't create a problem, my husband would love that then he could say I told you so...:( |
When I brought Gracie home, I kept her in an ex-pen until everyone adjusted. I have four cats, at the time about 3 to 14. For the most part the cats said "Hmmm, what in the heck is THAT?" The two boy kitties really enjoy Gracie and Holly. The girl kitties could care less. Quickly, all kitties learned to "live up", upstairs, up on the bed, on a chair, the TV stand, anywhere out of reach of a puppy that wants to play. |
We have a cat that weighs over 20 lbs and is the ruler of the house ... or was until the Yorkies arrived ! Tigger has mellowed to the point of being rediculous as he lets the yorkies climb all over him , chew his ears and generally be pests at all times . DH was very worried about bring the first pup home as this cat was always a bit agressive ( though he had been raised with 2 cockers ) and an indoor cat .......... has turned out great ....unless you count the midnight rattling of the Yorkies kennels by the cat because he wants to play  and you know what Yorkies do then ....they BARK and bark !!! LOL! Good luck ! |
