Yorkies and housebreaking My Yorkie is now 10 weeks old and is doing an ok job at peeing outside when I take him out. Now my problem is that he pees outside but has a problem with pooping outside. I make sure to take him for longer walks but still he has yet to do it outside. He comes right back in the house, and poops right away and I tell him no, and show him where he should be going but it still hasn't helped. Any suggestions on how to get him to start to go outside? I know it takes time but I rather have one accident than it happening every time. I already tried using puppy pads to try to get him to poop on them if he has to go inside but he just passes by them. I'm frustrated trying to figure out what else I could try. |
I recommend you go to the Training Section of YT http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=6 and please post a thread on how you trained your 10-week old puppy to pee outside. Lol, really, I don't know if you've been lucky or the pup's a genius, and your complaining about a little poop? Most yorkies aren't pee trained completely until 6 months, sometime even later. Yorkies who are very "regular" can be taken out right after they eat, and because they are "regular" will poop outside. Many though, like the comforts of home. Seriously, you need to relax on your frustration level, most yorkies are with their momma at 10 weeks and she keeps all the poop cleaned off. I would just pick up the poop and put it on the pee pad. |
Thanks for the reply. I just kept taking him outside to pee for the last week and he likes going out there to pee, he actually whines to take him out when he has to pee. I'll just be patient in training him to poop outside. |
Welcome to YT. If you want him to know to poop outside take a piece of his poo and put it outside where you want him to go. They can identify their own stuff so he will start to get used to knowing that is where it should be. Also watch his tell signs for potty breaks. Your doing great so far if you are getting him to consistently pee outside. Good luck.... |

We've had the same problem. Logan rarely has a pee accident; it's always pooping inside the house. The last time he had an accident, my husband scolded him, and Logan hasn't had an accident since. We were told not to scold, but so far, that's the only thing that has worked. |

House training Yorkies If you will read in books from library and go to places on the Web about house training a small dog....they cannot even start to have any control over their eliminations until they are around 4 months old. Just think of them as a baby in diapers....can they hold it or know when or where to potty? No, they go when they have to where ever they are, but they have a diaper on. A puppy isn't any different. If yours at only 10 weeks is peeing outside most of the time....that is a miracle!!! Our little Yorkie, Ellie, will be 4 in May. She was not mostly housebroken until she was 9 months old. Our Vet in SC at the time told me to start being very aggressive in training her starting around 4 months and that she most likely would not totally get it until she was around 9 months. He also said, the smaller the dog, the longer it usually takes, as they have such small bladders. Also Yorkies are known for being stubborn...very smart, but stubborn. Ellie weighs only 3 1/2 lbs. full grown. So we confine her in our laundry room with her potty pad, bed, toys, food and water...with a baby gate....when we are gone. That way if she can't hold it she will go on the pad. Confining them in small areas with a potty pad is one of the best ways to train them. When you can't watch him...confine him in a small area. Dogs do not like to mess up their dens. And, yes, most good breeders do not allow their Yorkie puppies to leave their Mothers until around 10 to 12 weeks. Some do let let them leave at 8 weeks, but the experts say that this is too young for the small breed dogs. I tend to agree. We got Ellie at 11 weeks old. Hope this helps. I have house trained three dogs, so any questions, I will try to help. Judith |
