Yorkies and respiratory problems? Well Luna has been having this weird breathing pattern going on. At first we all thought it was a cough but we can clearly see that she doesn't open her mouth one bit when she begins to inhale deeply and kinda shake. I'm not too sure how to describe this. It's kinda like if she were gasping for air. I took her to the vet and he says that everything seemed normal, but he didn't run any blood or xrays because the cost was ridiculous so we opted for antibotics (to treat the symptoms as if it were kennel cough, unless it persists). I wish she would've done that breathing at the vet's but she didn't at all! So the vet really didn't know exactly what I meant. Since being home after the vet she's already done it 3-4 times. I am so afraid, my baby looks like she is having a seizure when she gasps like that. It did scare me taht the vet said if it persists it can be a collapse trachea which he says is common for yorkies... please pray that that isn't so! :( I'm kinda regretting not getting the xray and blood work done, but the bill gets really high and it's the first time anything like this happens, I'm confused, anyone console me... |
Go here and read about reverse sneezing, http://yorkieviews.com/reversesneezing.htm that might be what is happening to your little one. If so, it is not dangerous, just annoying. You will also see a link on the left of the paragraph about it and that will take you to a page with more information on it. |
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO SOOO MUCH!!! that is EXACTLY what it is!! **BIG SIGHS OF RELIEF** boy I should've gone here before going to the vet!! Thanks again!! I read the first paragraph and it is exactly what Luna has. I'm off to read the rest! :D |
Whew!!!!! So glad that you discovered that it's the sneezing thing........ |
Ooo, she's been doing it again. Even though I know that it's something I shouldn't worry about I feel like she is struggling when she does this. It really breaks my heart so much, have any of your babies had this and do they grow out of it? I just hope it's not like some type of pre asthma or something... |
if it were kennel cough she woulda had her mouth open like she was CHOKING on something!!!!...... (just went through it with my dog.......... ) we worry about everything dont we???....... im glad you didnt pay for the bllod and xray, you woulda paid and they wouldnt have told you anything (and they probably would have wanted to run more expensive tests when those ones failed!!!!) |
my other dog a lhasa does it every now and then. she has allergies really bad. certain things make her scratch and chew herself raw, when it gets really bad we have to take her to the vet to get a steriod shot which we hate doing b/c it is bad for her but it's either that or let her chew herslef raw. |
Breathing problem I found that when I rub my yorkies throat it stops him from doing it, also you can put your finger over their nose so they breath out of their mouth and that stops it too. I know it sounds like a horrible thing to do by covering their nose but it stops them from gasping for air out of their nose. Hope thats helps, it helped my dog! |
Tbrooke is right about what to do, Mickey has it and he is now 7 years old. When he was younger he did it when ever he was playing a lot and even during the night sometimes, he has pretty well stopped it now, only once in a great while, but he is not near as active as he used to be. He still plays and runs, but not as much as he did as a youngster. I try to keep my site updated on health problems for yorkies so when I find out something new I do put it up there. |
buckeye does this all the time also. just as tbrook99 said it helps to rub the throat or block the nostrils. try to make them swallow. it still scares me when he does it. when we first got him the vet noticed an irregular heart beat. this turned out to be due to his address change. but then he started this "breathing fit" and i thought he was having a heart attack. |
Luna does this about 5-7 times a day. It scares me so much!! I did the blocking her nasal passage and it seemed to work. I felt horrible, but I did it. It hurts to see her like that, I feel like she is going through so much torture. Thanks everyone for the help and advice! I truly appreciate it! :) |
I searched the forum to find something on this, I think Penny's having these sometimes, I'll try rubbing her throat next time. Thanks for posting link :) Quote:
