Need Advice For Smooth Transition From House To Apartment Please It's been awhile since I've been on this site. Little "Prince Simba" is now 1 year old and doing great! I love this little guy so very much. He brightens my day just being his cute little self. I need some suggestions/advice to make our move a positive transition from a nice roomy house with an enormous backyard, to a one bedroom apartment on the 4th floor with elevator service. Sad to say, but my 8 year relationship with my fiance has come to an end. I am stressed as it is, and would like some advice on helping my little sweetie pie adjust to apartment living. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...:confused: |
First of all, my condolences on your relationship, but my sincere respect for you having the courage to head out on your own. Yorkies are resilient, and Simba will probably adapt faster than you. If you don't have him trained to use pee pads, you probably should consider it. It's going to be much harder for you to take him out every time he needs to go outside since you no longer have a yard. Anything you can do to get him regular exercise will help. If he tends to be yappy when you're away, you might have problems with the neighbors. You might want to leave the TV or radio on and leave him lots of chew toys to occupy him. And check with your neighbors to see if he's behaving. Good luck. |
If I teach him to go on pee-pads, will that undo the fact that he is finally housebroken?:confused: |
Hmm, maybe someone with pee-pad experience should weigh in here. I never trained pee pads because we have a yard. But I'm just thinking it would be much more practical in a 4th floor apartment. And I would think he would be able to distinguish the difference between going anywhere inside and going on a pad inside. |
I use the washable pee pads. pepper is alone for about 10 hrs at night sometimes when me and hubby work, he tries to come by and let her out, but they get busy and can't. So pepper is trained for outside and inside. She lets me know if she needs out if i am awake and sometimes while i sleep(yorkie kiss up the nose) I'll put her out but if she gets up in the middle of the night and just needs to pee or is alone in the house and needs to pee she uses her pee pads. I usually wait till I have 2 or 3 and wash in the washer( the poo you pickup and put in the toilet) try little bit she sells washable pee pads. sorry if this is a little incoherent, just woke up |
How did you get Pepper to start using the pad? I've never used these pads because most of my dogs have been large dogs. Where can you get washable pads? |

I'm still brainstorming here, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But I would train him to go on the pee pad outside first. Take a disposable pad with you on a walk. Put it down near a tree or somewhere that you think he'll go. If he does it, treat, treat, treat. Do that a couple times, then take him to a pee pad in the house. |

I just pick it up and flush it - It's a huge help as far as the girl going 'outside' - They also have pads down in my room and the living room - but he'll need to exercise - so I'd try to walk him as often as you can - we do 2 walks per day...If you can't do walks - put pee pads down in every room and consistently put him on them telling him to do 'his business' and WHEN HE DOES - give him a treat and throw a parade you could try a litter box too if he isn't fond of the pads - GOOD LUCK !! |
Sounds like a good idea, worth a try. I just don't want to undo what we worked so hard at achieving. I'm moving into a new, never been lived in apartment, and it would be a nightmare if he started peeing all over the place on this brand new carpet!!! lol I feel bad that Simba has to go through this transition. He trembles like crazy when we're in the elevator. All this because of "male mid-life crisis"!!!! Thanks for taking the time to help me out. :-) |

you could get enough and cut out little squares - if you have a washer I bet this can pass thru the washer but not the dryer - I have the washable pads with a standard throw-away on top in the house.....it took a few weeks but they're doing really good now. |

Thank you.....it's been hard that's for sure - it kind of feels like I'm living someone elses life .... in time I guess things will feel more comfortable but it can be very lonely not having your other 1/2 with you anymore...so take your time adjusting and try to remember the good things you have NOW vs the bad that you left behind..... I know I know - easier said than done right ?:( another thing you may want to try is get a little throw rug (one that he already knows) and if he'll 'go' on it - then you can just throw it in the wash when you need to - a friend does that for her yorkies...and she has a house LOL |
I am so sorry for all you are going thru right now. When I had my Yorkie Zorro the first 5 years we moved every year. He transitioned well. We always unpacked the day we moved and tried to set up familiar things for him. He wouls look confused for a day or so but he adjusted fine. As long as Mom is there. Good luck |
