I would appreciate your thoughts about naming and selecting a breed My husband has came up with several names and breeds for me to choose from to replace our family decreased pet. I would you all the help me choose the name and breed. Breed 1. miniature schnazer 2. scottish terrier 3. west highland white terrier 4. havanese 5. yorkshire terrier Name 1.Austin 2.Alex 3.Brody 4.Chance 5.Dillon 6.Elliot 7.Kaiden 8.Nic 9.Troy 10. Miles Thank you, Cathi:thumbs up |
Well, of course I'm going to say Yorkie :D !! And I love the name Brody! My 2nd choice would be a Havanese and the name Chance. Good luck with your journey. |
I would have to say Yorkie also but I like the name Kaiden. But second would be West highland terrier and the name brody |
Yorkie would be my only choice!!! I like the name Dillon |
from what i know about miniature snauzers they can be VERY high strung. so i say...... YORKIE!... that's a no brainer on this site :p |
My choice would be Yorkie. I like all the names that you have listed. But if I had to chose it will be Kaiden. |
I love Yorkies to death, but they are not the best pet for everyone. So much depends on your lifestyle. Yorkies more than the other breeds need human companionship. Are you home a lot? Your list contains many of my favorite dogs, and before I decided on a Yorkie, I researched all the others and decided at this point in my life, a Yorkie is perfect. I am an empty nester without grandchildren yet, and so the hours I spend grooming and playing with my Yorkie are perfect. I enjoy petting him at night, and so the silky hair was a definite plus for me, as you probably know some dog's fur isn't as pleasant to the touch. Some of the dogs you have listed need much more exercise than the Yorkie and if not exercised enough may become destructive. So no one else can pick the perfect dog for you. I think all the names you've selected are cute, but I think you need to do a bit more homework on the different breeds. Another important factor for me was whether there was a great breeder nearby. |

Hi, what about a mixed breed, jovie is a shorkie a shih tzu / yorkie mix and about as sweet as they come, smart as a whip cute as a button, and about half the price of a purebred the lady that had her breeds purebreed yorkies and shih tzu but jovies litter was an accident and once a saw her it was love a first site, she looks like a yorkie but with the shih tzu ears and face, will have to get some pics for you all to see, but maybe that would be a good route to go in, just a thought, good luck on whatever choice you make. |
thanks and happy easter and we have thought about mix breeds |
We had a schnauzer growing up named Heidi, but we affectionately called her "stump" because she didn't do anything! She was sweet and nice, but the laziest dog I have ever seen and would never play! We loved her though! The only thing I can say about Scotties, we had a lady in our puppy class with two of them and she said they were really stubborn and a handful! I think Havanese are beautiful dogs and we had the sweetest one in our puppy class too! I'm just in love with Yorkies, such personalities they have!! Oh and I love Kaiden and Brody, but I'm half Irish! :) |
If you go to the AKC website each breed club has done a description of the breed. In my experience a purebred will breed (for the most part) true to breed in other words what they were bred to do. All dogs have different personalities but will usually be driven by the breed type. http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm?nav_area=breeds I don't have it anymore but there were are some websites where you could put in what you wanted a dog to do/be and your personality and it would match you up to a breed. A dog should never be purchased on looks alone but what their breed type is. It makes dog guardianship so much more enjoyable for everyone.:) |
I just want you to now that we are not trying rescue a another furbaby on the way they look. My husband did a lot of research before talking to me about this. He want to make sure that Sal new brother would be compatable with him and this breeds seems to be the best. |

OP, good luck in your search, I think researching the breeds is one of the best parts of bringing a new furkid into your home. (At least I did before I settled on yorkies as the one and only breed for me):) |

Take a Chance and get a Yorkie - you'll NEVER regret it. :) |
I would appreciate your thought about naming and selecting a breed I have had many pets, but nothing like my Yorkie, also have you thought about Carin Terriers? I love the name Troy, have never known a dog named that. |
I dont know about names but I would get a yorkie. They are the cutest of the dogs you have mentioned |

I adore adore adore Yorkies. I think two Yorkies would be the best! I'm not sure if you all realize this, but she already has another Yorkie. She's looking for a companion for her Sal. :) |
Thanks Sal and I really appreciate your wonderful input. |
I LOVE the name Elliot!!!! That is sooooo adorable... I would go for the Yorkie. My chewy loves to walk, and we were going for an hour walk a day before it got cold here... But Yorkies don't NEED all that exercise. They like it but can do with out it. I love westies and almost thought I wanted one until I read you must have a fenced in back yard and let them RUN RUN RUN!!! We have no fence and tons of coyotes....   So the yorkie was what we got and I love both mine to death.... |
I would get a Yorkie.... I think they are the best! But coming here on Yorkie Talk, you might get that answer from people ;) My yorkie is very social, excellent with children and everyone that comes in the house falls in love with her... even the dog hater in my family have accepted her! They are tiny, cute, clean, social, they love exercise and can go without it. YOu can carry it everywhere more easily.... Also, they are cuddler but can be independant :) I personnaly don't like Shnauzer. All the ones I know, and even a giant snauzer tend to bark a lot, are boring or yet not appealing. I have never come to be attach to a snauzer. But this is my own opinion. I know some people think Yorkies are small yappers that are stupid. I love the mix poodle and black lab... they are so cute ;) My oncle taught like that of small dogs, but he is very impress with Bikini. She is 9 months, she is housetrain to go outside and on a pipi pad. She pees on command almost. She sits, laydown, turn around, stay and come already. The only problem with her is when people arrive, she is so excited that she can be anoying. She doesn't bark a lot. Just once in a while (sometimes with sounds on tv.) Anyway, names are very personal I think! |
From what I can see schnauzers can be destructive chewers !! I have a Maltese and a Yorkie but If I were to get another, it would be another yorkie. As far as names, I always think when you see the dog you know whats its name was meant to be. My maltese is Lucy after the wonderful Lucille Ball !!! Her fiery and funny attitude is the reason I called her Lucy. My yorkie came with a name , its Cooper, but If I had to choose a name for him it would have been Bruno !!! Just because such a little dog deserved a mighty name !!! |
The votes are in!!! The lucky winner is Yorkie with 13 votes all other got one vote a piece The top 3 names are Brody,Chance, Kaiden Now it is time for me to start looking in my area between Charleston,SC and Jacksonville FL. I hope to find one right after we return from AZ. in June. Thank you so much, Sal and Cathi |
