How to pick a good Yorkie playmate?
 
Hi everyone!

I have a 1.5 year old Yorkie gal who is dying for a friend. She gets extremely excited & submissive around new dogs - she jumps & wiggles & freaks out until the new dog gets close, then she gets low to the ground, sometimes on her back, sometimes peeing everywhere...you get the idea! :)

When we dog-sit, the other dogs always end up getting irritated because the Yorkie won't leave them alone. She is always trying to play/snuggle, and they are always trying to get away.

Does anyone have any breed suggestions / personalities to look for in a 2nd dog? Our Yorkie is so different personality-wise than when we first got her, so I'm nervous about going on personality alone.

The breeds we're considering:
1) Maltese - same size, known for being playful
2) Shih Tzu - good reputation as a "happy dog" - is the larger size ok for a Yorkie?
3) Brussels Griffon - good with other dogs, good size, but known for getting attached to one family member (worried about jealousy issues)

May I ask why you are not considering another yorkie? If you are looking for a similar personality, and level of playfulness, I would think a yorkie would be your best bet.:)

i think your looking for personality. all dogs have different personalities. i would take her with me when choosing a companion and find another dog that suits her energetic personality. it may take a few visits.

my york is very energetic also. his embarrassing quality is humping other dogs. (dominance thing):embarasse :embarasse :embarasse :embarasse :embarasse

While certain breeds have certain "traits" there is still so much individual difference. Are you planning on getting a puppy or an adult? With these other dogs that you dog-sit, are they much older than your dog?

how about a yorkie mix? A Morkie or a Yorkipoo?

I looked for a long time before I found a brother for Chip (Yorhuahua), because I was VERY particular in what I thought would work best for Chip. I totally lucked out with how well Harley (yorkie) worked out. The main things I was looking for was a yorkie adoption/rescue, around same size (which was the hardest part I think, since Chip is a teapot), age, and temperment. Through other social meetups, I found that Chip was very drawn to other yorkies along with chihuahuas. Chip looks more like a yorkie, so I figured I would find him a yorkie brother that he can relate to.
