Taking dog out without vaccinations Hi there, me and Tia need to go see my mother this weekend by train. She has only had her 1st shots and is awaiting the second shot. Will we be ok if she is in her carrier and not on the floor? she shouldn't come into contact/ the vincity of any other dogs. By the same in the first shot she had 2 shots of lepto (not sure what else...) and in the 2nd she will get parvo and the anti distemper vaccination (amogst some others). |
You should be fine if your not around dogs like you said. I took my 2 Yorkies out before their second shots. |
You should be okay if she is carried or in her crate. I would not let her within breathing distance;) of another dog or let her on the grass where other dogs could've been. By the way, the lepto vaccine can be dangerous for Yorkies. It should only be given in a limited number of cases and I'd personally wait to give it after 16 weeks. My Yorkie collapsed after vaccines and it was most probably that part that did it. |

I know I was very apprehensive about her having it (I wrote a thread); but the Dr assured me that she needed it; and the pros outweighed the cons |
The problem with those first shots is that any maternal immunities remaining from nursing kill off the viruses in those first vaccines leaving the puppy completely unprotected. That period is called the "window of susceptibility" when puppies are at great risk of contacting deadly diseases like parvo. If you must travel with her, make sure she is not around any other dogs and does not go outside in any areas where other dogs have been - no exceptions. |
