collar vs harness i'm curious if it's better to use a harness for walking than attaching a leash to a basic collar....online it seems just like a preference but i'm again, wanting to know exactly what to do BEFore the fur baby gets here :) |
Yorkies are prone to collapsing airways so a harness is always recommended. I cant remember the scientific term for their airway. I was told this by vet. |
tracheas.. that's it! |
Most small dogs have a soft trachea, and anything that puts pressure on this area can lead to damage and even collapse. Even some of the harnesses are up to high on the throat and can cause problems. I use the step in harnesses on my three girls that Cindy makes. (chattiesmom) They are made of silk so as not to create a lot of matting. |
Until I joined YT I was ignorant about a lot of things including the fact that attaching a leash to a collar can cause a collapsing trachea. My 12 yr. old female is showing all the symptoms. I used to walk her with a collar and she'd pull. Now I only use harnesses to walk my furbabies. |
Great answers. I love the Buddy Belt Harness. http://www.metropawlispetboutique.com/1846.html# You can find them cheaper than this, and they sell them on e-bay as well. I haven't had any problem with matting and it looks so cute. The first six months they grow the most, so you might want to get an inexpensive harness at first. |
Another reason to have your little one in a harness besides what the other members have told you is, if all of a sudden you needed to pick them up your dog because another dog was charging you won't hurt them in a harness. |

My two yorkies have never been in a collar and never will. We do have harnesses in a large variety of colors and patterns. :^) |
Callie wears a collar with her tags on it all the time but thats it for what the collar is used for if she is going to be on the leash she has her harness on otherwise she will choke herself and its horrible. |
puppia makes excellent and stylish harnesses. |
I'll never put a regular collar on Maggy May because she's so tiny and prone to trachea collapse. Now that warmer weather is just around the corner (crossing fingers, lol) Maggy, my Husband and I all went to the vet yesterday and got her fitted for a Roman Harness, it doesn't go around her neck, it goes around her chest, I really like it. You can do a search on them and see pics of how they fit. |
The knock on harnesses is that they encourage pulling, but my new obedience instructor had me clip the leash onto a ring on the harness that's at his chest, not the ring on his back. It puts no pressure on his neck, but it pulls at him a little differently than the top ring does. He's less inclined to pull when I hook it to the front. But absolutely, no leash to the collar. I was ignorant of that for the first few obedience courses we took, and the instructors were idiots. I may have damaged his trachea in the process. |
