Why does Jenna cower and hide? Jenna is our second yorkie. She is very rambunctious and outgoing and friendly. However, she cowers sometimes... and will run and hide under furniture if for instance there is a loud noise or there is an argument or something. It upsets me SO much everytime she does that because I feel like something has happened to her that has forced her to be scared. She is so outgoing and never afraid of strangers or anything like that, so when she gets frightened, it just confuses me. We got her from the same breeder we got Jaya from, however, the breeder was in Argentina and she brought Jenna home from there. I dont know if something happened that has traumatized her, or whether or not its just her personality.... Does anybody else's yorkie cower and act scared sometimes?? I just need to know if it could be just her personality, or whether or not something happened to her before she came to live with us (she is 5 months old, and we brought her home at 10 weeks. She was seperated from her mother at 8 but was socialized and drank milk from one of the breeders other dogs upon arrival in Canada). Is there anything I can do to make her feel more secure or to support her during her 'scared' episodes??? Even the vacuum cleaner frightens her...... n the thing is that it is totally against her natural personality -which is inquisitive and extremely friendly. Im so upset about this!!!!!!! We have toned everything down and try to keep a very quiet and calm environment for her, but she still hides :( |
I have two senior Yorkies that came from deplorable conditions. They are frightened of everything, but that would be comparing apples to oranges. I also have a Yorkie that came from a loving home at 4 mo. Even he responds negatively to loud noises. Dogs don't like arguing either. Often wonder if they can feel the negative vibes, and you know that dogs are very intuitive. My one senior girl is deathly afraid of thunderstorms. There was a thread about that and it was suggested to not feed into it because it just re-enforces their fear. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will respond to you and give you better ideas. |
I read somewhere that yorkies (maybe all puppies) go thru a fear stage at 4-5 months. Maybe it's just a phase. |
Lucy gets this way sometimes for absolutely no reason that we can find. I know for a fact she has never been traumatized and it doesn't happen often but it does happen. |
KaCee sometimes cowers too and I know she has never been hit. She does it mostly with my BF. He'll go to pick her up and she'll cower into the corner. She's not scared of him because sometimes I get the feeling that she likes to play with him more than me and she loves to cuddle up next to him to take naps... |
Hi! Lulu sounds like Jenna. She loves people and giving kisses but if she hears a loud noise or thunder or something that scares her, she wants to get away to a safe place (usually the bathroom). She will also shake when she is scared. She seems very sensitive to noise but I am not sure why. The vet said that sometimes small dogs become phobic with certain noises. I usually try to let her know it is ok and in a while she will usually calm down. At these times she likes to be by herself and will not sit with anyone or even let anyone pet her. I am trying to get her used to going out more by joining a dog playgroup. I am hoping that helps. Colleen |
thank you for posting everyone!! Let's hope she outgrows it ........ (i mean i was adjusting the xpen last night with the girls in it, and Jaya stays there watching me (completely trusting me), while Jenna dashes over to her bed and shoves her face in the corner to block out everything). It just breaks my heart that she does this. Ive noticed something else too.... when she doesnt want to do something or is scared, she will shove her head in something (so like if im holding her, she'll put her head in my armpit, or like she'll dash under the sofa head first).......just like an ostrich putting their head in the sand.... as though if she closes her eyes it will disappear. She is my angel and I just want her to he confident and feel secure. I am hoping this is just something she will outgrow. |
My karleigh is the same way, I have had her since she was 6weeks, She loves people, But is so affraid of loud nosies and will run off to her favorite place to hide, She is 3 now and still the same:( Fire works are the worst, and thunderstorms:( good luck to you:) |
miss buffey used to cower, shake and get really scared when there was any sort of loud noise ... she used to have a more timid personality...she has grown out of it and is not like that too much anymore :) she has learned she is the alpha and is not shy about much anymore :D |
my little joe who is a rescue shakes and cowers on his belly and lifts his hind leg as if to say please dont hit me he does this if i have the broom or a empty plastic pop bottle he absolutley hates men so i am assuming he has been hit with these things he also runs if outside and the wind blows and makes anything make a noise like a tarpaulin cover |
