No Sleep Last Night We had a bad storm last night and Rickles is scared to death of thunder and heavy rain. He doesn't do like most other dogs do and find somewhere to hide, he runs and barks until the thunder storm stops. We went to bed and I drifted off to sleep and then boom the thunder started and Rickles (who sleeps with me along with Gleason and my cats) started running around and around the bed - he did get down he was on the bed running around and around. Sometimes he would run over my hair. The cats finally got so disgusted that they gave him a swat and got off the bed. Gleason just looked at him like he was crazy and went back to sleep but I kept trying to talk to him. Around 2 am the thunder stopped and went to sleep. I called the vet today and I'm getting some valumn? to give him when it storms. I'm afraid he will have a stroke or a heart attack if this keeps up. Anyway I am beat today. Does anyone else have a yorkie so scared of storms? |
Sorry you didn't get much sleep. I haven't had that experience with mine during storms, but have you heard about a T-shirt that helps with this? Something about the tightness is supposed to help calm them. If you google "anxiety wrap" you can find out more about them. Hope this helps! |
Yes I do! When it started stormin here Little Man hides behind me and starts shaking or he's on my lap shaking. Well the power went out and he starts barking until I turned the flashlight on. He did have an accident on the couch when the power went out and it thundered at the same time. Poor baby was scared. He never left my side at last night until the storm was over, then it was only to use the pee pad. |
Lucy barks like crazy at thunder. I think she can hear thunder we can't even hear. Thankfully I live in a place that storms are rare but when we visit Mexico there always seems to be a nice thunderstorm during our trip and it's a sleepless night at those times... |
I had a Yorkie awhile ago who freaked out during storms and had a collapsed trachea and I lived in fear of storms as she would go in to respitory distress. I hope the valium helps. |
My 3.5 lb. furbaby is terrified of storms and does the circling thing---over my legs, over my head. Tried the valium thing and it had no effect. Just lately I ordered an herbal remedy called Petcalm. The first pinch doesn't seem to affect her much, so I make sure that I give her a pinch when I know a storm is coming and then give her another when the storm hits. She's still scared but she doesn't get so terrified that she pants and circles endlessly. I too am scared that she will give herself a heart attack. |
You just described Ramsey...are you going to give him the valium every day? It takes awhile for it to get in their systems. I don't think giving him one during a storm is going to accomplish claiming him down...maybe I'm wrong. Beats not sleeping...cause someone is panting and pacing all over your head. |
Yes, I know how you feel. It's really sad how scared they are. We babysat my stepdaughter's yorkie and all took turns holding him. In the end, I took him into my closet, turned out the light, and he seemed to feel safer. Both of just sat in the closet for a while........bless his heart!:aimeeyork |
