needing lots of information and experience! hello...it was mentioned to me that i should join this site when i was posting messages on criagslist about needing yorkie information and supplies. I'm a grad studeunt about to move into at 2 bedroom apartment in the Cincinnati area...and i'm READY for a dog. I'll be living alone and will be doing a lot of my research and data entry from the apt and would really love a companion. I've always wanted a yorkie but my friends and family are all BIG dog ppl so have very little advice to give me. I've looked into a few breeders in my area (honestly not too many stand out as very caring) and have begun the search for puppy toys, bedding ( i've ordered a soft crate that travles) and accesories. Im really looking for any advice on breeders, toys, bedding, training, and any other information. Thank you so much for your time reading this :) |
Welcome~! You'll find a wealth of information here...everyone is very generous with their knowledge. Also.... my "unbiased" opinion (not!) is that a yorkie will be a perfect companion for you, esp. if you will be home alot! They love their people!!!! Ask away! deb |
Welcome to YT! I"m sure a lot of members will reply to your thread with helpful advice on your search for the perfect furbaby :) Lucy has a soft sided crate that folds flat and we use it all the time for travel and when we are home she likes to sleep in it :) |

Welcome to YT. When I first joined I learned so much about my furbaby. This is a wonderful site! Sort of addicting..lol But wonderful people to chat with and they have tons of advice and experience with yorkies. If you are going to be at home all the time, then a yorkie is a wonderful little person to have around. They love to be with their Mommies and Daddies.. They are cuddlers, entertaining to watch, keep you on your toes. But honestly I wouldn't want it any other way.. Odie is a wonderful little boy whom I wouldn't trade for the world. Good Luck finding your new baby :D |
Hi, Welcome to Yorkietalk, May I suggest you read the "sticky" at the top of discussions page called Yorkshire Terriers Frequently Asked questions. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6016 It will give you an overview of the breed and things you need to know about breeders, supplies and training. In addition there is separate forums for further discussion on in these topics. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/index.php I use the search engine frequently, and I have found it very useful in gathering information needed quickly. I agree with the above poster who said that Yorkies need companionship. I think it's hard for them to handle being left for more than 4 hours a day. I know lots of people do it, but they usually get another dog to keep them company. |
Just wanted to say Welcome to YT!! You'll find tons of info and lots of very helpful YTers! |
I am so glad you took my advice and joined us. Good luck with everything and I hope you find all you need to know on here and much more. |
Welcome! :welcome4: to YT!!!! |

hi , i have not been on this site long myself but the few questions i have asked have always had good helpful replies . i am pretty new to being a mom so may not be able to help much ,but i can say that yorkshire terriers are an absolute joy ,and if you are going to be home alot they are the perfect friend . i find macca the most loving dog i have ever come across he stays by my side all the time and often snuggles his head into my neck like he is trying to give me a cuddle, and from what i have read on this site all yorkies seem to be the same . they are also very intelligent so needs lots of stimulation ,and although they are quite hard to traine, with persistance and love they get it eventualy as they just want to make there owner happy ,at only 6 months old macca will now sit , stay ,fetch and gives me his paw and although he has the odd accident or two he is house trained ! you cant go wrong with a yorkie if its companionship you want ! good luck with your search for your new best friend :animal36 |

Hi and welcome!!! (thats feels weird considering I just joined Sunday!) I was a little like "come on, a yorkie chat site" when I first saw it, but my lil' Roxi had a surgery and was acting weird and I was really scared and desperate for info so I joined.. She is my 1st yorkie and I have wanted one for literally years! Let me tell you what a blessing this was! OMG, the wonderful people here walked me thru it, gave me advice EVERY step of the way! And kept checking up on her all the time!! I'm still in shock...I have never come across such caring and thoughtful people online... other than my own fam, they understand how much we love our Yorkies.. Good luck on your search, and stay involved here, I promise you will be glad you did... XX |
you will also notice "regulars" as I call them, and listen to them. They have a wealth of knowledge and are so willing to help!! Thanks again, you know who you are cause I'm sure you are reading this!! XXXX |

Yorkies are great companions!! Of course there are many things to know about Yorkies. There are certain health issues that are common (there are some bad breeders out there resulting in certain health issues that can be avoided) and you will want to make sure that you do your homework. (Liver shunt, hypoglycemic issues, luxating patellas, collapsing tracheas) There are some great Yorkshire terrier books that will give you good info, and also some threads here will help, too!! "Teacups" don't exist. There is a standard and some are small on the scale. Many times the tinies can have more health issues. ( I personally think a good size is 5-7 lbs... but this is a PERSONAL preference). Most reputable breeders keep their pups until they are 12 weeks old. An "approx" judgement to how big a puppy will get.... double their weight at 12 weeks.... and I add a pound to that) I know that there are some breeders here on YT that would probably be happy to give you more info... ( I think that Sugar's Mom is hours away and she is a breeder here) Good Luck to You!! Hope that you find the perfect Yorkie! (if that is what you choose) and.... Welcome to YT!!!!!!:) |
thanks SO MUCH!! all the information and places to look has been very helpful! I really appreciate it....but now i have another question (i'll have LOTS i'm sure). I've been in contact with someone who wants to sell me a never used sherpa original style carrier, black...does anyone have a sherpa carrier? reviews? |
Hi Congratulations, I just got my first yorkie (well my family has always had yorkies) but I bought my first yorkie last June after graduating from college. I also live in the Cincinnati area. Although I'm still living at home with my mom, saving up to buy a condo. Anyway, I'm not sure of any yorkie breeders in the area. I know there are classified ads in some of the local papers like the Pulse Journal and the Fairfield Echo. But, I do know that if you are looking for good dog food Complete Pet Mart sells a lot of good brands such as Wellness, Canidae etc. It's a small pet supply store but they have mulitiple locations throughout the area. Also, once you have your puppy feel free to pm me and I can give you the name of a groomer and a great veternarian. Where are you attending graduate school at? Quote:

I go to grad school at Miami. I'm going to be moving into a two bedroom apt and am really hoping that will be enough space for myself and a yorkie! where did you get your yorkie? and how did the training process go? i think i'm leaning towards the crate training idea....thanks so much for the ideas! |
Unfortunately I bought my Yorkie from Petland. I didn't know at the time about puppy mills and how horribel Petland is. Luckily, my Lucy is healthy and the best dog. I crate trained her, in fact she still sleeps in her crate at night and is in there during the day while i'm gone. I live with my mom who has 2 yorkies that are mostly pad trained and Lucy also will use the pads. I also took her to a puppy training class at Training Tracks, I took the class in West Chester, but I believe they have another location in Oxford so you might want to think about enrolling in one of their classes. They were wonderful I think it was 8-10 weeks long on Wednesday nights, the class had about 6-8 other dogs of all different sizes. But they teach you clicker training and handling skills, etc. It's also a great way to socialize your dog. Especially if he/she won't be any other animals. |
:welcome4:Hi and welcome to YT! You will find all the info about yorkies here. YT is a great site.:) |
Welcome to YT! I have found the YTCA.org website to be very helpful. It offers a list of breeders by state who are supposed to adhere to the ethics of YTCA. Good luck in your search.:) Quote:

It might be best to wait to get the carrier, until you know the size of your dog. :D That said, even before I got Joey, the first thing I bought was a car seat! For a list of breeders in good standing with the YTCA check out this site. http://www.ytca.org/breeder4.html |
