rescuing animals...my $.02 I was at the vet this last week and a lady came in with a medium sized mix breed dog. The dog had a small scar circling his entire muzzle area. Apparently, when the previous owners left the island, they decided it would be a good idea to tie a wire around his mouth to keep it shut and leave him on the street. She also said there were plenty of other cases doing the same thing (zip ties, etc.) What is the purpose of that and how could anyone do that to their pet or any animal for that matter??!! Some people think that just because they aren't humans they don't mean as much in this life and they can treat them anyway they like. Its so sad and breaks my heart all the time. I guess I have to think of it as I took two less animals out of bad situations and gave them good homes. I can't rescue every animal and sometimes I feel like I don't do enough, but I guess its more spreading the word about animal cruelty and speaking up than filling a house with dogs and cats. It makes me think of a commercial that I see regularly. Apparently, there are ton of variations on youtube saying the same thing. A grandmother and grandson are walking down the beach and the beach is covered with starfish. The boy is throwing them back into the ocean and the grandma says "there are too many starfish out of the water, you will never get them all. Surely you cannot expect to make a difference" and the grandson replies as he throws one back "I made a difference to that one, it made a difference to that one" Seriously, makes me cry every time!! |
I am figuring they close the mouth so they starve to death, or they don't end up attacking someone (geee....how considerate! ). Some rescue animals go through the most horrible situations, its amazing how they can still turn out to be great pets. |
I don't go read puppy mill sites any more and don't look at the videos of animal cruelty. It just breaks my heart and I hurt for days and days. I wish I could save them all and don't think I do enough, either. I did save one little Chihuahua from a puppy mill and she's all I can handle right now and I love being able to save her. I still look at her and cry sometimes. My two Bichons are so happy and healthy and just wonderful companions. I want that for all dogs! |

I know what you mean. So many times I have just wanted to settle down with me and Wobie, and not constanty have rescue dogs coming in and out of the house. It really takes a toll on me emotionally and physically, and its hard to juggle all the fosters and take care of my baby Wobie too. But at the end of the day, its worth it when I know that I'm saving their lives. I just wish I could do more... |
Your story is all to Real.. And so very sad... I have to say something to Though...... If you say............. Quote:
I am sorry But We all Need to Look we all need to Do something.. To me when you Turn your back on these poor animals IT is as Bad as Killing them yourself..... I am sorry if it sounds Harsh... But SOMETHING Needs to be done. .... Even if you don't have money to Save or Donate you can Educate and Try to Tell everyone you meet about these Horrible things that happen. Be the Boy that helped the Starfish Make a Difference even if it is For Only One . You have made a Difference! |

Just curious ... What does everyone do besides adopting from shelters & telling people about puppymills & not buying from stores??? |
Omg ..... .... this makes me so d mad and upset and .... ah gosh I don't know .... What is wrong with People .... would they leave there child behind too when they get tiered of it ??? |
I can only imagine what Bob went through before coming to me. I wonder if he truly was abandoned, I wonder if he was mistreated, I wonder if they even wonder...but I dont care. He picked the right house to come to along that busy stretch of road. Mine. |
These people are just plain SICK! |
After meeting a YT member who rescues the little ones . I decided to help in the patrol to locate puppymills , help to take care of the little ones and bring bags of dogfood to a few shelters around my town . |

I'm a big advocate of rescue first. I know many will disagree with this but I really feel that there are too many that need homes (Including Yorkies) and I'm really not a fan of breeding. I'm sure this will stir some up but I have to wonder if the female were given a choice would they want to have puppies? I mean think of how woman feel being pregnant then think about how you'd feel having to be that way heat after heat until you're too old and then placed because you no longer fit into someone's breeding program and that's if you were lucky enough to be with someone that at least cared enough to find you a home. Some are not even that lucky. In so far as what to do about puppymills, back yard breeders and inhumane conditions. ADVOCATE FOR STRONGER LAWS. Elaine |

But why do people dump animals in the country, tie things around a dogs mouth, leave tied up all alone, live in an empty house??? People have to know there are shelters now- but they leave them to stave- die - a long , lonely, painful death!! I noticed that our local HS , charges if you bring aniamals to there door??? There are poor families everwhere-$25- $50 does not buy a lot of groceries, but it does buy some! |
Spreading the word about backyard breeders and puppymills to as many as possible. I believe in rescuing and trying to give these babies a home and life they may have never had. But for me I know my limitations and what I can afford to take care of. If I could I would scoop them all up. Educating the people one comes in contact with is a big plus.:animal-pa |

I also Gather food and other supplies for the shelter and Donate every month to them. I report and Follow though if I see abuse. and I also Educate when ever I can.. |

That sounds like a real sweet commercial though, it made me feel better after reading about the poor dog you saw. |
Awe, that is so sad and infuriates me to no end!! How anyone can treat an animal in such a way is beyond me. I'm glad their are people in this world with loving hearts that go and adopt these forgotten and unloved animals and give them the life they so deserve. Basically three of ours are rescues, (the fourth is a gift from a friend) but I'll tell you what, the rescued ones, they are just so different, it's like THEY KNOW what you've done for them and they never forget it. They are so loyal ad loving and always look at us with those eyes that just say, "Thank you for loving me and for giving me another chance at a good life." No, we can't save them all, but we surely can make a difference in ones life. When our furbabies pass away, I'll never have another one unless it's a rescue, just the way I feel about it. So many out there need a second chance, need to know what it feels like to be really loved and cared for. |
I know this thread is about a week old, but I think it needs to be bumped. Its important. At the shelter I just started volunteering at, there is a dog there who was raped by a man. There are dogs that have been abandoned and abused. The abuse that dogs and cats endure everyday is so awful and I wish that there were laws protecting them more. |

I know that you will witness some horrible things as a volunteer, but just remember, there are so many happy endings for these guys! The most amazing thing to witness is when they realize that someone is kind and loving towards them ... something that most of them have never known! Good luck!  |
Our daughter adopted a rescue (yorkie) about 2 months ago. She was 11 months when she got her. She was crated for at least 10 hours every day with no food, water, blanket, toys, NOTHING!!! She is the sweetest dog. But she is very "behind" - on the same level as my own yorkie who is 5 1/2 months old. Her eyes had no life in them. I was very afraid that he spirit had been broken, but just in the last 2 weeks, we have a major break through. Her eyes came to life and I was never so glad to see that in all my life. So we are happy:-) |

We went on a puppy mill raid and found 350 dogs, all small breeds. One little dog had three legs but when the vet examined her he found that she had a fourth leg but it was glued to her body by poop and matted fur. Two other dogs were stuck together and couldn't get apart because they were also stuck together with poop and matting. Thank God we shut that place down but there are hundreds more. It really makes you look at people differently. |
