Tea-Cup/Toy/Minature/Standard???????? Hi all, Anmaco Yorkies from the UK emailing!!!!! Latest picture of Marnies Pups on avitar. They are 2 weeks and 4 days old, eyes open, getting their feet and FAT!!!!!!! If you recall Marnie (Anmaco Welsh Bliss) UK DLRC .. had 7 pups!!!! 6 girls and 1 boy!! Mum and pups doing very well, though mum has lost a bit too much weight,so they are startingto get weaned tomorrow, that will be fun!!! I love this time with the pups, when they are beginning to explore and develop their personalities!!!!! Well, i would like your opinions on my dogs, as they are not bred for show, they are bred for their kind gentle temperments, loyalty, chekiness, especially with children, their stamina and come from a line of 40 years breeding, relating far back to Huddersfield Ben where they were bred for working. My dogs - Buddy (stud) -6 inches in height and (5lb) Marnie (Girl) 6inch (5-6lb) and Penny 6inch (Girl) 8lb. Where would you class them??? Interested in your answers!! |
7 pups - wow!!!! Sounds like your little ones are in good hands. I think 5-6 lbs. is considered 'standard' and the yorkie breed falls in the toy catagory. I'm still new at this so others with more experience can answer better. |
sizes 3 Attachment(s) Hi thanks for your reply, thought no one was reading!!!! Yes i agree but the Yorkshire Terrier started off a Standard!! I breed Minatures and Standards, i dont breed the Tea-Cup and Toy, though over the years my girls hve thrown them in the litters, but they are usually the runts, but some people go crazy for them, wanting them so tiny over hear - fit in your handbag type!!! i hate that, Yorkies are dogs, and they are Terriers, so let them be themselves!!!!! what do you think? hope u like dogs! |
"teacup" ugh....it's become a pet peeve of mine when people say that. The only thing that fits in a "teacup" is TEA! Anyway, I think your Buddy and Marnie would fall into the standard range and Penny being slightly larger than standard. |
Can I ask about weaning so very young? They don't even have teeth at 2 wks of age. Mine don't start sampling food until 4 wks. Maybe if you put Mum on a higher fat content food, it would help her weight? |

I think you're thinking of poodles; they have 3 categories in the American Kennel Club -- standard, miniature, and toy. Yorkies are in one group, and it's the toy group. Standard size for the toy group is 7 pounds and under. |
I'm just a lay-person without any breeding or raising puppies knowledge. But having said that, I wondered about weaning at 2 wks. Wouldn't the puppies still be getting healthy antibodies from their mother somewhat like humans? Getting a good healthy start? Just guessing. |
Your Yorkies are very cute! They can only be classified as standard or toy, since there is only the standard classification, and they fall into the toy-breed category. There is no such thing as teacups or minatures, even though some are smaller or larger, teacup and minature classifcations don't exist for yorkies. |
There is only ONE classification for a Yorkshire Terrier and that is TOY. A Yorkshire Terrier is a Toy Breed dog with a standard size of 7lbs and under. There is no such thing as a teacup/minature/standard yorkie. Only the one Yorkshire Terrier, a toy breed dog. The standard calls for a Yorkshire Terrier to be 7lbs and under (most prefer to produce a size of 4-7lbs). However, some yorkies end up being on the smaller side and some end up being over standard...they are still only a Yorkshire Terrier...just can't be shown. Classifying yorkies into different sizes is very misleading and deceitful in my opinon. It's a major red flag to me when I see a breeder use the words "teacup", "miniature", etc. for their yorkies. |
