Puppy Troubles Hi there. Long time no post. Things have been going Really well with my pup.But there are just a few things that im worried about. One is when i say "come here louie" he starts running away. so i come after him and he keeps dodging me.I dont know why he does this. its not playfully either. second is his chewing habit.I know all dogs chew on stuff but im not too sure on how to get him to not chew on everything he finds on the floor. Help is much appreciated. |
If your scolding him never use his name, just say bad boy, when he does something good say his name & give lots of praise! |
Seems he has some submissive issues. He may be a little scared of you for whatever reason. When you call him to you do it from your knees and with a gentle voice. And if he's not running from you in a playful manner then try not to actually chase him. Just try to get as close as possible to him then pick him up. |
To come when called is the single most important command you can teach your dog. He needs to do this in order for you to protect him against danger. This is how I trained my boys, I bought this lead (bought it off Petedge.com, but cannot remember the name senior moments LOL) and tied it to my belt as soon as I got home each night. It is about 35-40 feet long. Then I hooked the boys to the lead. It is long enoughfor them to go into other rooms. Every once in a while, I would call them to come. If they did not, I simply reeled them in. When they got to me, they got a treat. So then they started coming each time I called, they got a treat. Now, whenever I call they come running, no matter where we are! Be persistant and do it continuously until they learn, then take them somewhere confined, let off the leash and call them. Keep practicing, praise and treats. They will get it. |
Hi! Glad you are having fun with your baby. Have you formally taught the "come" command? If you have and he has regressed in his training, I would start over. If you haven't, then you should start there and you will have him coming to you on command in no time. These little guys love to please and if come is taught as a happy command then he will be a safe puppy because you will be confident that he will come when called. Good luck. |
Hi, Yep, you have a Yorkie! From what I have heard other Yorkie people say is what (to a Yorkie) "come means go". They are so small what they can get away from you so quickly. Most of the time you want them to do something what they don't want to do. You can try this, always have a treat for your bab when you call him. It worked for my Sweetie but she is very smart ,only coming so close, to see what I want. It's a game for her. Have fun! |
Millecorrales, your idea is a very good one for teaching come..You can use the same technique outside to teach the command..Give treats every time at first then stagger the treats but ALWAYS do the praise..Chasing a puppy just teaches him he can play this game called"try and catch me!" Good luck in getting him trained..it will take a while but with consistence it will be done.. |
