What to do? Opinions Please We are going on vacation in May. I was planning on taking Dusty but I've been thinking. This is a family vacation with my husbands whole family. There will be 8 kids there ages 15 down to 1 year old. I dont want to be stressing the whole vacation about kids hurting my baby. I sure dont want to get into anything because I am defending my dog, however I will not stand by and let the kids stress, or hurt him. My brother and his family have offered to come over everyday and let him out to play and make sure he is feed and watered. I think it would be best if I left him here. I want him with me sooo bad but I am thinking about his safety. |
I wouldn't advise leaving your baby at home alone to have someone check in on him...alot can happen when no one is there. What if he got hurt or choked on something or got sick during the night? I just wouldn't be comfortable. Can he stay at your brother's house? Will you be staying with family? When we travel all of ours go with us and as long as I have the playpen and their supplies everything is fine. |
I had total knee replacement surgery and was in the hospital for 4 days. My older yorkie Rickles has real separation anxiety and the vet advised against having him boarded so I got a friend that my yorkies dearly love to stay with them. The first 2 days Rickles wouldn't eat at all and lay in front of the bay window watching for me. She finally got him to eat but he was sick when I came home and the vet said he had made himself sick grieving for me. At that moment I vowed that unless I had to have surgery or something serious like that I would never leave him again. If I can't take him I don't go. My other yorkie is still a puppy at 8 months and he was happy as a lark with my friend staying there. I failed to mention that Rickles is like he is about me because I am his sixth owner and I have had him 4 years. |
How long are you going to be gone? I have left my baby alone for very short trips with my sister and mother-in-law checking on him and letting him out. If your trip will be longer than a night or maybe two maybe someone could stay at your house with him. I understand your delimma we went to Disney for 10 days last year and I could not stand it but my friend kept him at her house. He did better than I did with the separation. Arent they just like children!!! lol Good Luck! I'm sure you'll make the best decision for both of you. |
i always bring my yorkie with me. i feel he is safest with me. even when we visit family with children. i explain to them that he is very fragile and in most cases he sits on my lap or i put him in the room i'm staying in and close the door. |
There is no doubt about it I dont want to leave him. We will be gone for a whole week. My brother has a female shi-tzu and they normally do great but I took him over there the other day and she wanted to eat him up. I'm scared he might get hurt in that situation. I dont have anyone that could stay here for the week. I want to take him with me and part of me thinks it will be fine but with so many little kids for so long I am worried that something might happen. I guess it would be best for him to be with me and maybe have to stay in his grate a little more than to be here for hours on end with no one here. I thought about the playpen thing but my hubby said it would be too much to carry, plus I would have to buy one just for the trip. |
Do you know someone or have a friend that would be willing to stay at your home with him? Before i had my Mia, i used to house and dog-sit for weeks at a time for a lady that would take a couple vacations a year. She would pay me fairly well for it. She didn't feel comfortable boarding them.... so that was her only other option. |
I think it would be better if you took him with you. What about buying a small exercise pen. They do not take up too much room. I hope you enjoy your vacation. |
I got a really cheap playpen at Wal-mart for $50.00 and it folds up for really easy storage. Where will you be staying when you go? Maybe you could find a stroller, they work great too(and fold up for easy storage). Kids can see but can't touch. You could see if someone here has a used one for sale. |
If you have a Farm and Fleet in your area you can get the plastic puppy pens for $47.00 if I remember correctly...they fold up for storage and they aren't heavy to move around. I used them with only 4 sections for my boyz when they were babies and they don't take up much room at all. Tell your husband you'll carry it if he doesn't want to. |
Good advice here. I agree that leaving him alone with your brother coming in every day may not be the best choice. I leave my pup with his breeder. Check to see if your breeder also boards the Yorkies she has bred. |

I would take him. Two suggestions...I have a front pack; looks like a back pack but fits on the front. When I go places I don't want people to bother him, I keep him in that. I know it was less than $30 at PetCo. He has ridden in that for 4 years. The other suggestions; I just recently bought a stroller from another yt member. I can't say enough good things about it. Murfee is safe and can see out and usually no one even know he is in it. Good luck. |
I have a big crate that I could take. It folds up so no problem there, plus I just bought a new bag. I was just afraid the little kids would run him scared. we are all staying in a big cabin, we will have our own suit so I could keep everything in there. Someone mentioned the front carrier, I was looking at those the other day. Are they easy on the puppies? Dusty wants to be right up under my feet all the time and I thought about getting one for around the house. It would also be good because he would be with me and not in his crate the whole vacation. We are also taking our motorcycles, I know alot of people hate to hear about them on bikes but he loves it sooooo much. With the front carrier he would be alot safer on the bike. Please everyone dont hate me for telling about him riding. I promise I am a good mommy. |
Murfee is very safe in the front carrier. I can clip him in and he has been in it since about 3 months old. We take him to stores with us, to parades, all over and no one can bother him 'cause they have to get past me first. |
