how do you know?? How do you guys know when your yorkies are playing nice with the other dogs? Is growling and/or jumping on each other a deal breaker? This weekend, Coco was playing with a little pom at the bakery I take her to. They were both jumping on each other and doing fine until I heard the pom growl. At that point I picked up Coco and I think the owner was offended. Like "WELL SHE WASN'T GOING TO DO ANYTHING" type of offense. Am I being too overprotective and not letting my baby have fun?? |
Codie and Katie growl and jump ALL OVER each other. But then again, they love each other and live together. Their growls are "love growls" (hehehehehehe) and they NEVER hurt each other. But (in my opinion) you can't be too sure of other dogs who don't live with you and Coco or at least play with Coco on a daily basis. Their growl could be an annoyed one or oen they use before they get mean and attack. I could be wrong but there is nothing wrong with caution - especially with these tiny babies involved! Better to ve safe than sorry! And if someone gets offended, too bad for them. Coco's life is more important than some stranger's feelings. |
All 3 of mine growl and jump all over each other. They are just doing it cause its fun. However, you were right in picking Coco up. You never know what a strange dog is going to do. If you notice one dog rolling on its back, licking the other dogs muzzle, or putting its ears down and kinda crouching on the floor it usually means that they are being submissive. But if you see a dog putting thier head above your dogs, pushing down on your dog with its chin on either your dogs head or the back of your dogs neck, curling its body in kinda a U shape and growling, or growling with both its lips curled up ( I know kinda hard to see if its doing this if the dog is only 6 inches tall or so.) that dog is being aggressive and showing dominance. Just a few little hints on doggie body language. |
But I don't know the difference between the nice growling and they are moving around so fast, I can't even see what they are doing. All I know is that Coco lays on her back a lot but then totally jumps all over the other dog. |
my coco never growls. he just wags his butt really hard and gives kisses galore. but i am also very cautious about other dogs because i don't know their temperment. and seeing that most dogs are bigger than coco i am very protective. so i would have done the same thing you did. |

It's just hard to know with strangers dogs. I mean they see each other at the park and I never let her play with the big dogs but just the small ones. They approach each other and Coco is usually the shy one. She acts submissive, but then proceeds to jumps on the other dogs face, body, whatever. Usually the other dogs join in in the jumping. I've never heard Coco growl or bark, but a couple of times I've faintly heard the other one growl. I never know what to do, to keep letting them play or be the mean mommy and pick her up. |
When my two girls play there is always tons of growling, jumping and wrestling....at first we tried to stop it but over time we realize that this was the way they played together, but they live together and I KNOW that they will not hurt each other on purpose...but on the other hand, my brother's pup in is town and we DO NOT them growl and bite each other, his pup is a little bit bigger and tries to sit on our girls when playing, but she is almost twice their weight so we are very careful we they are playing, we tell them NO when they start growling as we don't really know what this means, since they are not around each other all the time... Vainchick...I think you were right to pick up Coco, I would have done the same...you have a right to be overprotective and I wish more people were...then we would have to hear about pups being hurt by one another... |
They probably were just playing, but if I would have been in that situation I would have picked Gidget up too! |
