Tiny Is "tiny" the new buzz word for "teacup"? Is it just another marketing ploy? |
That word is to actually describe the dog/puppy, not a ploy. They are just trying not to say teacup which is great! |

It is confusing. People feel like only unethical breeders use the word teacup. They are enticing people to buy very small Yorkies. Most ethical breeders won't breed a Yorkie below 4 lbs. I would be wary of any website that is using those words. They're probably selling the Yorkies before the age of 12 weeks and promising not to exceed a certain weight, which no breeder can do. People at YT describe some of their babies as Tinies and it just means they are very small Yorkies, under 4 lbs. Neither word is useful for selling a puppy though, since all Yorkie puppies are Tinies. |
I would MUCH rather see the word "tiny" than "teacup". I use the word tiny...such as "she has a tiny yorkie" or "I don't want one that tiny". I've seen reputable breeder say "tiny"...such as "she is going to stay small or tiny". What I don't want to see is people purposely breeding tiny yorkies or breeding for tiny yorkies. And I don't want to see "This one is going to be tiny, tiny, tiny".. It's pretty easy to tell if a breeder is just using it to describe the dog's size or if they are using the word to try and get more money |
That's my point! Quote:
How do I know what to trust? |

Using the word tiny to describe the size of a smaller puppy is just a description so you know that it is on the smaller side. The thing that bothers me is when they up the price for the so called "teacup" or "Tinies" to me that would be a red flag, why would they charge more for it then the one that is a regular puppy size? I thought only Girls cost a little more then the boy's do . I see nothing wrong is the breeder uses the description of tiny and sells all her puppies at the same price. |
I will sometimes state that a pup will be tiny and give an estimated adult size. People have to be aware that with a tiny there is more responsibility. The smaller the dog - the more work/worry they are!! |

I don't mind seeing the smaller ones sold for a slightly higher price, but I don't want to see several hundred - thousands in difference because of size (from the same breeder/litter). Even reputable breeders will tell you that its easier to sell a smaller yorkie than a larger one, especially if the larger one is over standard. So they might price the smaller ones a little higher because of that. But good breeders will be more concerned about finding the right home for the individual puppy than making more money ;) |
I agree and understand - THANKS! |
i think tiny is okay b/c that's how a refer to star.. People ALWAYS ask if she is a teacup and then i explain there is no such thing.. then i just tell them she is small/tiny |
I think Tiny can be used when they say something like "this Yorkie looks like she is going to be tiny" but I dont think TINY dogs (under 4lbs ) should be sold for breeding. A good breeder won't let the dogs go before 12 weeks or so. IF the rest of the website doesn't tip you off to poor breeding, give it more thought, if your insticts tell you to run away, do it. |
