big dog/little dog
 
I was wondering if anyone has a large dog in their family along with their yorkie and if so, how does that work out. We do not have a yorkie but a shih tzu mix who weighs 7 lbs and are thinking of getting a large breed puppy. Do you think this would work? My little one uses pee pads and of course the big one wouldn't, would they be confused? Thanks!

I have a yorkie and a boxer. Snickers the yorkie is a big boy at 10 pounds and Seamus the Boxer is about 80 pounds. They are best buds. Snickers is young (10.5 months) and Seamus is about 6.5 years. I don't know how other large breed dogs are, but as a puppy they can be very rough and clumsy. I don't think that Snickers would have made it with Seamus a puppy. We got Seamus at 8 weeks he was 7 lbs, by the time he was 4 months he was 32 pounds. At 1 year he was 60 lbs and at 2 yrs he was 75 lbs. Big breeds grow at a much slower rate and seem like they stay in the puppy phase for a long time. A boxer is a high energy breed and Seamus didn't "Settle down" till he was about 4 yrs. I think that if you get a large puppy you would really have to make sure you keep an eye on them all the time and set up bounderies. This is just what I think. I love both my boys and love having a small one and a big one.

I have attached some pictures of my boys. The one of them laying together is current.

are you saying big dog referring to your 7 lb shih tzu?? I have 4 dogs inside, the smallest is my 5 lb yorkie, the biggest is my 13-14 lb yorkie, and I have a shih tzu(10 lbs) and a biewer 6 lbs..I also have a german shepherd and golden retriever outside...the little yorkie always goes over to the dog run and licks the 2 big dogs through the holes...I don't think either one of my big dogs would nip at any of the other ones, but, I don't let them out together, as I'm afraid if the big ones got playing with the little ones, they could accidentally hurt them

:D He is a big lover boy. This is how he usually looks after him and Snickers play...TIRED.:D

Our big dog is Boo our elderly Boxer. She is a very special part of our family -- here are my favorite pics - I am sure that everyone is getting tired of these same pics, but I can't help it, I just love 'em.

I know theres quite a few members on here with yorkies and big dogs and don't have any problems.

As for the pee-pad question, one of our yorkies is trained to go outside and the other one goes on the pads. They haven't gotten confused at all between the two.

Me, too! I think any big dog would be great with a small one. Just have to have extra precaution

Here are my big dogs and Ranger. Nitro the black lab is 85lbs, and the goldie, Lila, is 55lbs. Ranger is 4lbs but is CERTAIN he outweighs them both. They are so funny when they play, the big dogs totally let him win everytime!

I think it would be easier having the litle dog first, that way the puppy can submit to your little one, instead of having to worry about the older big dogs so much. Good luck!!

I think it depends on the dog. Our lab Bridget is 80 pounds and she's great with Bella. They play really well together. The rest of our extended family has 3 golden retrievers and one large mix. They're at least Bridget size or bigger. I have to watch them around Bella 'cause they seem to forget how small she is or that she's there and they'll run right over her when playing. Mind you, Bella's not that small. She'd 15 pounds but she's much smaller than they are.

Bridget was a goof as a puppy and she grew so quickly. Bridget was already 4 years old when we brought Bella home.
