SEW Question ?? New to this help !! Hello, I'm a 41 yr old married man... I'm trying to teach myself to sew  I'm very creative--have a degree in graphic arts. I think--I can learn it. I purchased a nice machine a month ago..... a JANOME it's nice Computerized. I have made some simple things to get use to the feel. I have not sewn since 8th grade :D I got a few patterns from Walmart for dog clothes. But a few of them are very:confused:  ?? What does the term... Cut 2 on Fold mean? Or Cut on fold? I have a vest harness pattern... When and how do I add the strap for the D ring? I want a lining in the vest. I wanted to turn it inside out and back? Make it look nice? Can someone explain? |
Hi Bullydad, The fold is when you fold your material in half you have 3 open sides and one close one, which is the fold. What is the pattern # I might have it and can tell you better by looking at it. Do you know how to read pattern's? I suggest you take your time and make sure you understand how to place the pattern before you cut it. |
cut on fold means to fold the fabric Aand place the pattern piece on the fabric so it is lined up in the fold. you will be cutting thru 2 layers of fabric. cut the pattern out but don't cut the side that is along the fold. when you open it up, it will be one complete piece. You will cut two piece just like this. One will be the lining piece. these two will be sewn together with a small area left open to turn it right side out. Then you will have to handstitch the opened area closed. To add the D-ring, I cut a strip of fabric and fold it lengthwise and iron it so the cut edges do not show. this is sewn from the neck to the edge of the vest with the d-ring sewn into it. |
Yu might look in to a short refresher class at somewhere like JoANN, or Hancock Fabric! Or what ever you have in your area! I'm like you, it has been so long since I sewed- I'd need to relearn!! Good Luck- you will get it!! |

Go to sew.com and type in "sewing terms". There's loads of info for whatever you need to know. It's a great search engine for any question you have. Good luck! You'll have to post a pic when you get it finished. |
Bully dad....don't let the pattern instructions overwhelm you....take it one step at a time. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what the heck it means...when you are reading it...as opposed to doing it. Do you want d rings and straps on both sides? You would cut out your vest pieces...top and bottom. Then take bias tape or ribbon...measure so that it extends over the edge....figure out where you want your d ring...some place it in the middle...some on the end....loop the tape through the d ring...sew beneath that to hold it...then place it from the neck to the bottom of vest...extending it over the edges...place your two harnesses pieces right sides together and sew. Remember you will leave an opening to turn the harness right side out. Clear as mud??? |
My best advice is the READERS DIGEST sewing guide book. It is probably one of my greatest finds. SO much helpful information! plus lots of pictures! Here is the link! |
See Bully dad...there's no way around it..you're gonna have to read the instructions...LOL |
I am also an oh-sew-beginner! :p Those professional patterns? NUTS! Here are some links to some free online patterns that I found to be much, much easier. :) http://www.sewing.circleofcrafters.c...stpattern.html http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/ah_pets_oth...513246,00.html I also went to Wallyworld and bought a couple of shirts and vests in his size and created my own patterns based on those. I am a visual learner, so if I can see it, I can make it. Good luck! :D |

Thanks for all the explanations and links everyone. :D Been thinking of learning to do this for a while and want to take a class or two at Joanns. :) |
Okay, I LOVE you all! My 11 y/o daughter is a whiz on the sewing machine! I will use this as an incentive to get her sewing dresses for Zoe! |
Thanks for the info... But i cannot see me being the only guy in a Joanns fabric class:rofl28ib: Most likely will not happen. But I will use the books and the links:thumbup:  I think?? I will get this !!! THANKS :) :) :) I will not try for a few days... to busy now. |
Can't help ya cuz I flunked out of sewing and it was strong suggested I not take the second semester class. :confuse2: But kudos to you for trying. I think the suggestion of taking a class is a great idea. Can't wait to see what you come up with. |
