Im gonna cry :( They adopted out this beautiful yorkie in October but the people that adopted her werent giving her the diabetes shots as they should have and now she is going blind. I wanted to adopt her anyway but Im to far away the woman said. Look at how beautiful she is though... http://www.saveayorkierescue.org/ani...nimalID=350111 |
Why oh why weren't they giving her the medicine she needed? So sad and so unnecessary! |
I know that ticked me off. She said that they even showed the people how to give her the insulin, I guess they didnt know how serious diabetes is. Im fully aware how serious it is. I live in South Texas and am a nursing student, 1 out of 3 people in the hospital have diabetes and most are blind or have amputations from being non-compliant with their medicine. So sad this had to happen to little Maggie. |
I dont know much about diabetes...now that she is back on meds will it prevent blindness or stop it from completely blinding her?? She is beautiful!! |
 :thumbdown As far as I'm concerned, that's animal abuse. It's not like they didn't know! This upsets me so much I can hardly see!! |
That is so sad! Why did they adopt the yorkie if they weren't willing to take care of it???!!!!!!!!!!! |
I can't imagine not taking care of her needs! How cruel. She such a little sweetheart! I hope she finds an amazing furever home! |

she is gonna remain blind and since she was not receiving her meds as she should have sbeen they may have to remove her right eye. But to answer your question, the damage is irreversible. |
That is so so sad...wth were these people thinking?? |
That is completely appalling....and so preventable. If you don't want the responsibility of a special needs dog....don't adopt one. Poor little lamb. :( |
that is so sad!! why would they adopt if they're not going to take full responsibility!!!! ugh |
Some people:thumbdown Sheilagh |
That breaks my heart. :( My Lady has been a diabetic for 6&1/2 years now so I know a lot about the disease. Maintaining a diabetic dog is a big commitment in time and money, but it is a completely managable disease if you do. Blindness is one of the main side effects in dogs, but unmanaged diabetes also damages other organs you can't see like the kidneys. My Lady still has her eyesight and has had no other organ damage after all these years. I treat her as I would a human diabetic, though, and test her blood sugar myself daily. Unfortunately, most diabetic dogs do go blind, most within the first nine months after diagnosis, usually because people wait too long to take them to the vet to be diagnosed or are too slow in getting the disease regulated. The good news is that dogs adjust very well to blindness because their sense of smell is so acute. I hope little Maggie finds a special home with people who will take good care of her from now on. |

That is so sad :( Did you try to adopt her again since October or you have tried again currently and they don't want to consider you because of the distance? |
THat is so sad. That is why I am sooo super extra precausious of who adopts any of the dogs that I foster. |
She was adopted in October and then recently ended back up at the same shelter. I found her on the site posted a week ago and the woman said that Maggie just ended back up there and thats when she proceeded to tell me not only was she diabetic but she was going blind because of improper care. Also yes they would not consider me because the distance. |

I hope the rescue group is extra careful when they screen people this time. Coping with a diabetic dog is not as simple as twice daily insulin shots. Even the minority that keep their eyesight like Lady have chronic eye problems like conjunctivitis, uveitis and dry eye. Lady sees an opthalmologist. Diabetics have a compromised immune system so it is hard for their body to fight off infection. I nearly lost Lady a year ago to an E-coli infection. Knock wood, I have had her on Transfer Factor (collostrum) ever since and she hasn't had a uti since. They will just have to be very careful to be upfront with potential adopters so they have a clear picture of the commitment they are making so sweet Maggie can have a long happy life like my Lady. |

To keep a little one under control, who cannot tell you how they feel, is awsome! Maybe I should change docters- ARe you taking any new patients???? LOL Good job! you baby got very lucky to get you as a MOM!!! |
oh how upsetting this is, if they could not handle it, they should have found someone else to take her that would.. she is very pretty... and looks so loveable.. I cannot go into those sites.. I get too emotional about those kinds of acts,,,:( |

She is hysterical! She loves getting her blood sugar checked. I made it a really positive, upbeat experience right from the start with a happy voice and a treat so she comes running when I tell her it's time to check her sugar. In fact, she'll usually comes running when she hears me unzip the case to her meter. :) |
