Can Yorkies handle hot pavement? I was taking Starsky to Petsmart. I took him out of the car and had him on a leash and we walked from the parking lot to the store. I don't know how hot the pavement was and wondered if I should have carried him. He did't act any different than usual. He just pranced right in. It has been in the 90's here and I am sure the streets and sidewalks get hot. |
I always try to watch mine, Hefner always goes for the shade under a car when he can or they start holding up their paws. That'a clue even I get! :D |
I have heard several things about keeping dogs off of hot pavement. I would think though as long as the dog isn't standing around on the pavement for any long periods of time it should be ok. |
Yes they can burn. I took Gus out the other day t check the mail and didn't even think of how hot the sidewalk was. When he started to march in place,,, I was like hello!!! My poor baby. I picked him up right away, It didn't seem to hurt him after but I'm sure it hurt at the time. I came in and shared some ice cream with him to say I was sorry. |
I was wondering the same. It actually doesn't seem to bother them as much as me, but I am always trying to get mine to walk in the shade or on the grass. |
I have always tried to think of if Im not comfy touching something then it probably wouldn't be too comfy for Schatzie either. Im guessing that their little paw pads can be burned just as we can. Id probably carry Schatzie anytime something is too hot or cold for her to walk on. |
Yes they can burn on hot pavements as they can freeze in ice cold weather, im always careful where they walk and at what time of day! If i think its too hot or cold i carry them ;) |
One way to find out is to put your hand on the pavement. ;) If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for them. |
It's the same when I take my dog's to the beach. When I take my flip flops off to set up my blanket and umbrella, I get jumpy because it's so hot! So whenever I go to the beach, I carry my babies on the sand until I take them to the water to wet their feet first, then I allow them to run and play on the sand. The same w/ pavement - which gets SO hot. |

I would suggest to just make it a point to carry them from the car to the store. They are not heavy, they are not big and they should not be exposed to hot or wet pavement. Dark surfaces absorb heat more quickly than light colors do so black-top would be worse than concrete. Yorkies do not tolerate extremes in weather very well and we need to protect these little lovebugs. PLUS, it is not possible to know what bacteria is on the parking lot..or the floor at the stores. A pet store that has an animal hosp. attached is a set-up for possible problems because people are bringing known sick dogs in for treatment. So, there are many reasons for carrying these sweet babies across pavements, hot or cold; and very few reasons not to. JMHO |
