Hi everyone! My name is Bethany and I am getting my first little yorkie puppy (who I'm naming Dolce) on Tuesday! I'm so excited! He will be flying in from Missouri to Jersey where I live. My brother has had a Boston Terrier puppy who is now almost 2 yrs old and living with us, but I never experienced bringing one home for the first time before. I was just wondering if anybody had any suggestions on what to do first. Also, the puppy was started on litter training at the breeder. I do not want to litter train my puppy, I was debating on crate training him, or just doing it the old fashioned way with no crate, no puppy pads, no litter boxes. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to switch him over without completely screwing him up? Thanks for reading :animal-pa

Oh Bethany he is so cute. I have never crate or litter or peepad trained; only done the old fashioned "go outside" training. I just watched Murfee closely and took him out often. When he had accidents I would tell him No and take him outside. I had no problems with him at all. Good luck and congrats on the new baby....oh and welcome to YT.

thank you i'm so excited to get him! My brother housetrained his BT the old fashioned way so that's why I'm leaning on that way, because afte a month he had it down, and I know my yorkie baby will be sooo much smarter than his Bostron Terrier! haha! thanks again for the advice!:animal-pa

I know a lot of people say the yorkies are hard to train but my Murfee was very easy...you just have to stay focused. I know you'll do GREAT!!!

congratulations on your new baby..he's precious..I do pee pad training, I have for years, and would not go back to outside training(I had a shih tzu run over on my lot line)..there are pros and cons to both...I sure wouldn't allow a puppy to roam free though until he's housebroken. I've never done the litter box training, although, some people have had a lot of luck with it..
Make sure you post lots of pictures when you get him..

How old is he? He looks so tiny; although Yorkies are smart it takes time for the muscles to develop for full bladder control. I like the pee pad training as well. It's easier too, especially if your not going to be around every hour or so to let him out of his cage. Don't feel like you have to use one or another method, I used several, crate for overnight (taking him out every couple of hours and set him on a pee pad). During the day he was in a playpen with a pee pad. I would take him outside first thing in the morning and praised him for peeing, and several times during the day and last thing before bedtime. I think having an older dog to show him by example will help too. Good Luck and welcome to Yorkietalk. He is so adorable, and I love his name Dolce.

Hello and welcome to YT.:) Wishing you luck with the potty training. I pee pad train my Yorkie and it has been good so far. Knowing that he can "go" whenever he wants is good to me. He does it outside too if we go out and if we go out several times a day, he doesn't do it inside as much so it works out great for us.:)

I don't crate train, either - Patty is right - the biggest thing is to stay focused.

I trained both our girls to go outside. I didn't find them hard to housetrain at all...you just have to stay on top if it.:bee:

Dolce is a doll!! :wavey: Welcome to YT!! A lot of people reinforce potty training with treats. You might want to teach him to ring a set of bells at the door. You can research that here.
