Mia doesnt like to be pet. Mia doesnt let me pet her. Everytime I try to pet her she will let me for about 5 seconds then she will start to bite me. She doesnt let anybody pet her she will start bitting them. What can I do? I dont think shes going to be a lap dog. She's a rough little dog. She bites on everything and anybody. Any suggestions? |
How old is Mia? Puppies are just like that. And they really don't settle down until they are much older. Bo is a feisty pup also. My husband says Bo is a really good pup when he's sleepy, lol! |

My dog Zoey doesn't like to be petted on the head or chin rubbed, she bites too. Not to be mean, more like playing. Zoey is 18 months old. she loves her back rubbed |
When I first got Abby (chi) she wouldn't let me hold her for that long. She would start to growl and bite me. She wanted DOWN!!! I first tried the 'NO'; that made her mad. Then I tried the tap on the nose when she was biting; that made her even more mad. I tried a tap on the bum; mad. So, I figured that since she was so young, she was needing a 'mother' figure, so I became Alpha dog. So, the next time she growled at me, I put her neck in my mouth and I growled back. She stopped growling. The next time she did it, I put her back in my mouth again. After a few times, the incidences became few & far between. Now, she is the sweetest, loving, CUDDLY dog. I can hold her and she doesn't even try to fight it. The dog is trying to tell you what to do; you have to remind her that she is the dog. You rule and you have the final say. I know it sounds bizarre, but it's the way they communicate. If you want to talk more about it, PM me. I can help you out. |
At 10 weeks old, they don't have time to be petted. They have way too many things to explore. Maggie is 5 months old. She has just started being a lap baby. She loves back to be massaged and also her tummy to be rubbed. If you sit down, you might as well get comfortable, because she just took up your lap. Give your baby a couple more months, and you will get your wish. |
Your baby is just a puppy - she's grow and settle down and realize it feels GOOD to have her back and ears rubbed - They just play play play at this age ....the puppy biting is normal - especially while they're teething - just wait and she'll be ok :D |

It sounds to me like she wasn't handled much by the breeder. Daily handling is a must and you need to insist that she behave while you're doing it. She will not just grow out of it, she needs to be trained. Hitting will only make sure she stays out of reach of your hand. Hold her firmly by the back of her neck with one hand while you stroke her with the other, make sure you massage her feet, so nail trim time goes smoothly. Any sign of growl or bite gets her loud reprimand accompanied by a shakedown with the gripping hand. A chew toy should be offered as an alternative to your hand. Treats (like a cheerio)and praise for any good reponse. Start with short sessions( a few minutes) and release her only when she is calm/submissive. Increase time by a few minutes every day. How long have you had her? |
My puppies are 7 weeks old and I am teaching them not to bite. The more your breeder does with them early on the better for you. Mine are held and snuggled constantly. I make sure they all feel relaxed while laying on their backs in my hands not held against me. Mine can be playing like crazy and I can pick them up and do this and they are ready for snuggle time. (I'm not bragging, just proud). They really are crazy little dogs at 10 weeks, they just don't think there is enough time in a day to let all of that energy burst out of them. I teach mine to "settle" when being held. Your pup should not squirm when you hold her. So try petting her while you are holding her to get her more used to it. Don't hold it against her or think she won't be a lap dog when she grows up (which is the key word here), she is behaving as a wild, crazy Yorkie puppy. You do have to let her know who is boss (and you'll be a lot better off if it is you!) :D |
My puppies bad about being handled when he's in a playful mood or sleepy. but i recently bought him nyla-bones. he loves those things. I found that if i give him one he'll lay there on my lap and chew and let me mess with him. but he doesn't growl or bite when i hold him and if he struggles to get down i hold him til he quits then i put him down. I'm trying to teach him not to struggle or jump because i'm afraid he could get loose and hurt himself. |
Mia sounds just like Deegan. He is 13 weeks old, and doesn't sit still for anything. And he bites everything... especially my ankles! I'm assuming that it's just a puppy thing, and that's what people are telling me. So I am just waiting for him to grow out of it. Good luck with Mia. I'm sure things will get better with time. |
Both Gracie and Sampson did the same thing when they were small. Gracie is one year old and never does it any more. Sampson is 6 months and rarely does it. Hang in there - it gets better. Puppies will be puppies |
Thanks to everyone for your advise!!! |
