i think it is important to let ppl know the myth, bc the people that call the pups "teacups" are the ones who'll go buy the puppy from the "teacup" breeder, so if we can lead them in the right direction, then maybe we're helping out a little bit... just as that person posted above her story, and mine from yesterday, if we can get ppl looking for a doggie, to do research and to find a reputable breeder, i think we've done our part in dissipating the myth |

I had a neighbor ask me if Harley (my 8llb guy) is a teacup. I didn't get annoyed at all. Why should we? They don't know any better! It was justa chance for me to educate one more person about no such thing as teacup Yorkies. That if a breeder is advertising teacups, they're just trying to get more money out of you! |
Well in my case, this lady was looking at buying a puppy that was a "teacup" and she would of wasted her money and been disappointed in the long run. She wanted a Yorkie and did not set out for a teacup, she was told by the breeder that hers were "Teacups" So I felt that she would like to know the truth and save her $$ and get a Yorkie from a good breeder. She was really grateful that I told her about this sight and the truth about the so called Tea cup! If I would of just kept my mouth closed and thought she was some dinggy person wanting a fashion accessary then she would have been taken in by a dis honest breeder. |
Hate that term! It shows that a breeder is either ignorant or out for money. And if a buyer thinks there is a "teacup" yorkie, they aren't educated enough about the breed to be buying one yet. Using that term only shows how uneducated someone is about the yorkie breed. |
All of my girls around around 4 1/2-5 1/2lbs and I get the usual "They're teacups!" thing... If I can tell someone isn't going to be persuaded, I just say no.. they're normal size.. and if they want to really know I'll explain it out.. But I was in Petco one day with my yorkie sisters and the smallest was just shy of 2lbs at 12 weeks and a lady was petting her and said "Shes 12 weeks and almost 2lbs??? thats what size i like my maltese full grown.. she's too big! you're going to have a 10lb yorkie!!"... All I could do was :eek: and try not to fall over!!!! She was itty bitty tiny to me then!!! |
All my fur-babies are on the smaller side, at just under 3 lbs for Gracie, 3.5 for chubchub :p Coco & Pixie and 4 lbs. for Shay and Trini... People always tell me they love them and I do get some annoying comments but the ones that get to me the most are yours are so cute, "but I want a teacup one"...I get that all the time!!! I usually will show them Gracie and say well, she is my smallest at just under 3 lbs. :eek: That still does not seem to be small enough??? First, there is no such thing and how much smaller would they want their dog to be? I think some people just don't grasp the point that they do grow as they mature for puppies to adults? |
i agree i've gotten comments about Kash too. when people ask me if he's a teacup, i feel just a little rude saying, "there's no such thing as a teacup yorkie. there are just small, medium and large." they probably just think to themselves, "yeah right" or "she thinks she knows what she's talking about." Kash is between 1.5 and 2 lbs at 13 weeks (which means he's supposed to be about 4lbs full-grown, but who knows for sure), and people still say they want smaller! this one lady picked him up and yelled to her friends, "this is the type of dog i want, but i want the teacup kind!" i was like, "they usually don't get smaller than him, and if they do, it's only by a pound or two... and the smaller they are, the more likely they are to have health issues." but people don't care... they just tune you out. |

I have gotten both ends of this. My forst Yorkie was a 12 lb-er and her ears never stood. One lady asked me if she was a Silky and when I told her no, she asked me if I was sure! I said yes, I think I kow what breed of dog I have! Someone asked me the other day if Zoe and Chase were t-cups, I said there's no such thing. They are just on the smaller side of the norm. He wanted detail so I gave a quick rundown. He seemed truly interested as his girlfriend was wanting one. I hope they listen. I mentioned broken bones, etc. I kinda hope I scared him a little! |
I have the same problem. If they are big, they are silkies, if they are small they are teacups, if they are young they are rotweillers! But, it does seem to be the "thing" now to have a purse-sized Yorkie. I guess we can only continue to educate as much as others are willing to listen. Kaatelin |
