Tail docking I was just wondering, why do yorkies have their tails docked? Thanks. |
im not really sure, but i think its just preference. i hear outside the US it isnt really done. |
It is breed standard. Originally it was for safety reasons and remains the preferred way (for some people). Since Yorkies were ratters, I imagine their tails could get caught or damaged and get them into trouble somehow. |
I have seen more and more pics of un-docked tails. I've got to say they are adorable!! Off topic, but I used to live in Evansville, near Boonville. Wasn't Henry Lee Summer from there? Anyone remember him? :D |

I always thought it was because of their long hair. It would seem like a long wagging tail with long hair would get caught up and tangled in something. But, tha's just my off the wall opinion |
1 Attachment(s) Buddy wants to proudly show off his beautiful tail :Puppy2: |
Bitsy has a full tail and I am personally against docking tails, but I have to admit, I LOVE the look of a docked tail. There's nothing cuter than a wagging nubbie! I think originally certain dogs have to have their tails docked for the dog's safety. Any dog who has to run through the brush to perform thier jobs (ratters, flushers etc). Other dogs, like the Shih-Tzu and the Maltese are companion dogs who's only job is to warm your lap gets to keep their tail. Their tail are long and curves over the back. |
Hey thanks for showing the photo. I always wondered what they would look like with their tail. He is beautiful. |
thanks everybody for the info. Yes I loved the picture of Buddy with his full tail. It really helped to see what it looks like! i have two shih tzus and am used to the full tail, but i can see the reasoning now how it came to be. also side note: I remember Henry Lee Summer(boy that takes me back!!), but I had never heard that before. I am not from here originally but my husb and is. I am from Cincinnati/southwest indiana originally. I will have to ask him that--he is a big music trivia buff!! |
I love the docked tail look. My neices and nephews call my pup "Nubbin" because of her little nub. I think it's the cutest thing. Is is even possible to ask a breeder not to dock a tail? |
