Crate size I am getting my first yorkie, who is turning out to be larger than originally anticipated. She will be about 7 lbs. fully grown. Is a 22" long crate large enough or should I exchange it for a larger one? Thanks!:) |
Is this going to be her area to be kept in her entire life while you are away from the house, or just a training tool and once she is trained, she will not be needing it anymore? I ask, because while training, you will need to get a smaller crate. Because she must still only be a couple pounds right now and even the smallest crate will be to big and you will need to block it off to make it smaller. As she grows you can start removing the blocks to make for a bigger space, but you never want it bigger than her to lay down and turn around. However, if you are going to use the crate to confine her while you are away from the home and you expect to practice this for her/your lifetime, then a 22" will be big enough for a 7 lbs dog and to put a pillow, toys and blankets to make this her nice safe haven. |
My guy is larger than average. He's going to be 9lbs fully grown. Right now he is 7lbs. He fits nicely in the crate and curls up still in the back of it. I mainly use it for night time. He sleeps in there for up to 9hrs overnight just fine and holds it until I let him out in the morning. After he is fully house trained I plan to leave him out. When I'm at work though I leave him out in the kitchen. |
Your responses are very helpful, thanks! I plan to use the crate through to her adulthood. She was 3 and 3/4 lbs at 12 weeks so I will see about blocking part of the crate to make it more cozy. Good idea to place toys in as well! I plan to then use the crate for night time for sleeping and for travel or while away. I wanted to be sure that there would be enough room, sounds like it will be sufficient and I will find a way to adapt the crate to her smaller size. Thanks to both of you! |
i would start with a smaller one then upgrade the condo for a larger one, not too expensive to do so. |
That's true. I will know better when I see the puppy. |
