Is 8 weeks too soon Hi everyone, I just found a beautiful puppy to adopt for my daughter. We are very anxious to bring her home. Problem is she's only 8 weeks old. Is this to soon:confused: |
First off, welcome to YT. And yes, 8 weeks is too soon. 12 weeks is recommended. Good luck. I know it's hard to wait but your baby will be better adjusted if you let her stay a few more weeks with mom and liter mates.:p |
Absolutely!!! Too Soon Yorkies, depending on size, need at least 10 weeks with their mom. She will teach her baby all kinds of socializing behavior that it will need as it grows up. Our moms frequently house break our puppies too (we have a dog door). If your Yorkie is tiny, it might need to stay as long as 16 weeks. I always suggest the the new "parents" come over for visits, even a couple times a week, to get acquainted with the puppy. Before we make the full transfer, we have 1/2 day visits at their new home. Then they come back and spend the night in the security of their mommy. Finally, we send fleece blankets that they have slept on with mom home when they make their final move. Of course, we also encourage visits after moving to their forever home. I know they are so sweet -- that is why we raise them -- but let them become the best they can be before going out into the world. Best wishes with your new baby.:lovewings Katelin |
I brought Rusty home at 6 weeks and he has been great since day one....But I had another Yorkie to practice on and have read every book ever published on Yorkies. I love the breed. My husband and I just could not wait and my breeder let me have my puppy at 6 weeks. By 10 weeks he was housetrained. Rusty was not the norm though, as 12 weeks is standard. I think alot would depend on how well the puppy has been socialized at 8 weeks and your experience in taking care of him, making sure he does not miss Mom and his littermates. |
Thanks so much for the info. My daughter and I have fallen in love with her and are ready to bring her home, but we also understand the importance of leaving her with mommy a little longer. Thanks |
It's to young for me, I'd prefer to wait till they were at least 12 weeks old. |
I brought my first one home right under 7 weeks, never a problem |

I brought Meka home at 9 wks... And saw no problems with her social skills or temperment. I think it varies from state to state, on the correct age a pup can leave the mom...but not sure... None the less, welcome to YT and good luck with the pup. Cant wait to see pics :) |
Yay! Another Mississippian! Thats like 3 in 2 days... Welcome to YT! I got my Jamie at 9 weeks and if I had is to do all over I definitely would have left him with his mom and siblings for a couple more weeks of Biting is a NoNo 101. |

Just want to say welcome to YT :) |

I think bite inhibition taught by mom and littermates is more about bite pressure. They teach a puppy where the line is between playing and hurting. However, once in a puppy is with its new owners it becomes our job to teach them that toys are for biting, people are not. LOL! |
