Question about Selecting Newborn Puppy Hello! This is my first post. Our puppy, Autumn, will be born around May 1. We will go soon after to get the pick of the litter. We are certain we want a female. We would like for it to be mostly black with gold and the wavy hair. Is there any thing that will help when we go to look at puppies. I know the male is black and gold and the female is blue and gold. We are getting this dog for a pet, but may breed her a few times. Of course if there is only one female we will take that one. I am not sure what the texture is of male and female. I will try to find out. Thanks for any advice!! |
Well Hello and Welcome to YT! First of all, do you know the breeder that you're getting your puppy from? Are both the parents owned by the breeder? Hopefully she owns both of them and can tell you the history of both dogs. You'll need to go back a few generations to see what colors the dogs are and even then, there are no guarantees. :( I'm sorry... you're probably not going to hear what you want to hear but you will find alot of information here. Most Yorkies look alike at birth and will for weeks. You won't be able to see a difference for quite a while. The only way to be certain (if you can ever be certain with Yorkies) is if the breeder has been breeding for years and knows all of her dogs... and even then, there can always be a surprise in a litter. Please stick around and read, read, read! Everything you'll need or want to know is here. Oh, and keep asking questions. Again... Welcome to YorkieTalk! |
Hi welcome to YT! It's great to see another Mississippian. Is your breeder on the YTCA list? |
Hi and welcome to YT! You want one with wavy hair  A yorkie's hair should be straight |
The lady we are buying this puppy from is a family friend. She owns the mom and dad, and only breeds her once a year. She is not what I would call a true breeder, but the puppies are registered. These are the only two Yorkies she has. |

ok a few mistakes i have made were, ziggy's back has a small hump. not perfect posture should be flat. no sloping back. the coat should be full, ziggy hair is broken around his legs not bad but not full. |
I gotta say, I had a yorkie, my first girl a rescue.. she had blonde hair, it was curly at the ends.. I loved it and I loved her.. she was a pet, and was so healthy.. and that would be my main concern.. healthy comes first or should come first. You will not know that early on which will stay black and gold.. but I have black and gold.. and her skin looks blue as her hair is so black.. that is the one sign I look for.. but you will not see this as soon as they are born. To me they all look the same when born.. |
read the sticky here on coats. |
make sure to check the head to make sure there is no open fontanel :D i think most babies look the same until like..after 8 weeks, but even then you cant really tell much about coat etc |
There is no way to tell what the adult coat will look like when the pup is born. All yorkie pups are born black with tan points and the hair will be slick and shiney. By the time they are 8 weeks old the very flufffy puppy will probably grow up to have the incorrect soft coat and if it hasn't broken color at all on it's body and it's head is breaking to a bronzy tone instead of a clear silvery hue than it will probably remain very dark and the head will fail to clear. What you are looking for is a yorkie that does not conform to the standard, which is fine for a pet but I would not advise breeding it. There are already so many poorly bred yorkies that our precious breed is beginning to no longer resemble it's beautiful self. |
Welcome :) I have a feeling that once you have your baby home your daughter will fall so in love she won't care whether the coat is curly/wavy or straight -ask me how I know :) I would go for health and temperment. |
Welcome to YT. Great name by the way......that is my furbabies name!!!:aimeeyork |
I agree.. :aimeeyork Hi...I agree with the others about not breeding her. Enjoy her!!:animal-pa |
Autumn Update!!! Autumn has arrived!!! She was born April 1st, and the only female, and I am NOT fooling! Only two pups born, one male and one female. On April 5th she already weighed 8 oz. She is VERY healthy according to the breeder. We can not wait to see her!! I guess that took care of having to choose!!! Mother Nature did it for us!! Also, I had the date wrong, the due date was April 1 NOT May 1st... Sorry |
