Will he stop marking or am I doomed? Tucker is supposed to get neutered on Monday. He is 6 months old and just started marking and really lifting his leg outside. With in the past two weeks, he has started marking outside on our walks. I have him go in our yard before the walk and then I try not to let him mark everything on our walks. He slips a few in anyway. He does not mark inside my house but yesterday we stopped by a neighbors house who has two yorkies. When we went inside he promptly lifted his leg and peed on their couch:eek: Fortunately they weren't mad. Anyway, I could not find a vet that would neuter before 6 months. I am willing to do belly bands, but I'm afraid I have waited too long and this will be a problem. What do you guys think? Am I doomed? LOL! |
Harley was almost 3 when I got him. He was not netured and had been used for breeding. The first time he walked in the house he lifted his leg and pee-d on me  ...walked over and did the same to my husband and son in about 30 sec. flat!!! The next day, while I was BUSY sewing belly bands, he marked on everything in my house, thank goodness I have wood laminate floors! I waited a week before he had his surgery, I wanted him to get used to us first. He marked 3... maybe 4 times after surgery, but I have not seen him or found a single spot in the last month! I cannot believe how it has calmed him down, it has just turned him into a little lover boy. I still watch him close, and keep a can with pennys in EACH room so I can grab/shake/and BAD BOY him just in case. It worked great for us....am wishing you good luck with it too. :D Kathy-Ut |
Chachi has been neutered and he still marks outside. He doesnt mark inside my house though. He will also mark if we go to someplace like Petsmart or the vets where he smells other dogs. I just put a belly band on him when we go to those places. So you just never know. Chachi started marking after being neutered |
My sons puppy was starting to mark, they got him neutered at 5 1/2 mos. and he has stopped now thank goodness! My biewer I got at 5 1/2 mos. on a Sunday, I had him neutered the next day, and he only lifts his leg outside, inside on his pee pads, he kind of leans forwars and goes...he's never marked in the house |
Was hoping that marking wouldn't visit our house. Did this morning. Caught my 1 yr. 3 mo. old Chipper marking on a blanket that my dominant female had been on. Knew it ticked him off that Rosie controls the pack. Was aware that he marked outside, but......now he brought it indoors. Looked for belly bands at a pet store this afternoon, but they only had female panties. Going to get my can with pennies in every room. Now I'm wondering if getting a male is going to bite me in the derriere. But I do adore the little stinker, so he's here to stay even if it means belly bands for the rest of his life.:D |
My vet said they neuter at 12 weeks. Is this so, or is it different everywhere by preference. |

It does seem very soon, especially because these breeds are so small. What is a good age to get a male neuterd? |
no younger then 5 or 6 months. But some (as I roll my eyes to andy) don't even drop their balls by then either. |
They both have to drop before they can get neuterd? |

okay I think Ill wait till at least 5 months then. Thanks. You all are so helpful on here. |
so if they are old enough to hump everything (10.5 months now), they are old enough to get neutered? |
My male marks everything outside..that's what males do.. Bailey was fixed at 6 months and only marked inside at the pet store..where there are alot of other dogs smells..but I keep telling him no and he hasn't done it since. I wouldn't worry if he's never done it inside (except where other dogs have been )..after he's fixed he'll be fine. |

Thats why Im counting the days for them to be chopped off. I dont want mine humping everything in site when we go places. Im sure 10 months is fine to get yours fixed. Ask your vet. |
Just cause they get fixed doesn't mean the humping stops.. jsyk..;) |

That's so true! Samson was neutered this past Friday and by Saturday afternoon he was chasing our cat around trying to hump her. Go figure LOL (he'll be six months this Friday). Fortunately he's never marked anything yet but it may be because he hasn't been outside yet (pee pads only). |
Bailey does it occasionally, mostly when he's frustrated or wants to show dominance, they do it alot to TRY to show you they think they are boss. |

i sure do hope the humping will stop after the chop-job. |
Thanks for all the responses guys! I guess my biggest concerns are him marking inside my house and inside other people's houses. It would be nice if he did not do it at petsmart too:rolleyes: I guess I'll just expect to put bellybands on him when we go places and cross my fingers that this works. I'm still holding out in the hope that he will not mark inside other people's houses after his neuter. |
The humping has nothing to do about sex, it's all dominance...I wouldn't worry so much about that, just show them it's NOT acceptable...I have a female golen retriever that is going on 3 years, SHE is always humping my FEMALE german shepherd(going on 2 years), and I mean all the time...I yell at her out the door, and she stops..... |
Mascot oh boy things to look forward to!!!!!;) Dot |

A good reason to hold off on neutering is in case any baby teeth need to be pulled it can be done at the same time. I didn't get Sugar until he was 17 months. He marked like crazy! He also humped poor little Spike kind of often:eek: - I know it's a dominate thing and he was trying to establish himself as the head boy dog or whatever but still...eww! I had him neutered and he hasn't humped even once since then that I can remember. I guess he's not concerned with being dominate anymore- what's the point?:p He also all but stopped marking right away. He'll mark outside sometimes and we've had a few incidents where he has marked a toy but for the most part I don't have to worry. I think we had Spike neutered around 8 months and he's never marked or humped and I mean never. He's never even lifted his leg to potty. |
Mojo was 4 1/2 years when we neutered him...he humped like crazy and that is one of the main reasons for having him done...he hasn't humped anything since and that has been awhile ago. Mojo will still mark occassionally, which we are working on, but we have an intact male that is in and out of the house alot too, so I think that may be the problem. |
Sncikers started marking outside at 10 weeks. I have never had any problems with him marking inside of my house or any one elses house. When we visit a friend I always show snickers where the potty door is. Then I will ask him to sit and ask him if he has to go potty. He will bark and then I will let him out. By doing that he knows where to sit to let me know he has to go out. Both my male dogs mark out side in my yard. Not allowed when we go on walks I don't give them a chance to stop and sniff. Snickers is now a little over 10 months old and has been potty trained since he was 4 months and has run of the house even when we are not home. He knows where it is acceptable to lift his leg. |
