Volunteering At an Animal Shelter? Yesterday I was watching a movie, it actually wasn't that sad except for the beginning. But, it made me want to do something. I know you can't save them all, but in the time that the animals have left you can make a difference. I know how sweet shelter dogs can be because I've had one for the last 7 years. So i decided i want to volunteer at the animal shelter. i asked my mom and she said we can look into it. what do you all think of that? the only thing I am worried about is that i will be really sad if one gets put to sleep. :wilted_ro So do you tink its a good idea? I figured if i was going to ask anyone what they thought it might as well be you. |
Good Idea? Of course.... That is a super nice thing to do...not only helping at a shelter but by helping any animal you can...even if it is just sharing ur knowledge with another dog owner. |
My daughters (age 9 and 11) have volunteered at our small local shelter this summer. They get to play with the animals that are cooped up all day and help feed them and stuff. Being such a small shelter, there may not be as much to help with as at the bigger ones but they have a good time and feel good knowing that the animals are a little happier! |
I went to www.petfinder.com and you can sign up there to be a volunteer and they will have an animal shelter close to your home contact you. It's a great thing to do and something to be proud of. |

Just go talk to someone at the shelter. They can tell you how to go about it. :) The only warning I would give you is to be strong and know that some of those animals will be euthanized. It's sad, but true... :( |

I work at the local Humane Society here in San Diego and there is always a need. In the summer they have what they call Pet pal camps and kids over 14 can be trained to help with that program. My kids have all done that and loved it. The shelter I work at is large and they only euthanize if an animal is really old, suffering or terminally ill. I think you can find one like that in your area. There is usually training invilved and you can call and they will tell you when their next volunteer training is. Great idea Megan! You will not regret it. |

I would give them a call and ask for the director. Explain what you want to do. He/ she should be able to place you in contact with the right person. wnalegria |
