Someone Please Help!!!! Hi, I have a 4 year old male yorkie who is losing his fur. This has been going on for almost a year. I have taken him to the doctor many times, and each time he says he's fine, he must just be nervous about something. They've tested him for mites (ew) and he doesn't have them. I give him a bath about once a week. He is balding from the bottom of his rib cage to where his hind legs are on his back (top part) only. Now is spreading, a little gone from his ears, tail and snout. Is my baby going to loose all his fur??? What can i do????? Please help..... |

Has the vet check his thyroid? Hair loss is a symptom of thyroid disease. |

I can't believe your vet didn't do a thyroid panel! Hair loss is a classic sign of a thyroid imbalance. It's such an easy test and such a simple and inexpensive condition to treat. If it's not his thyroid - and I bet it is - Cushings is another disease that causes hair loss, but he's a bit young for that. |
Food allergies or flea allergies must be tested for! |
A friend of they families rat terrier was loosing her hair, in no pattern, just sporadic. She came to visit at New Years and we took Misty to our vet, he pulled out his black light and turned the light off and you could see in the areas with hair loss it glowed and it was a fugus she had in her hair follicles. He gave her pills, shampoo and a cream to use and said it would be a long process, because her hair would have to grow out. She came last week to visit and Misty was better, her hair was growing back, we went to see Doc and he did the light again and she had just a few places that glowed, she got some more pill to give her. I can call Doc Monday and see exactly what she had if you want and you can tell your vet. Misty had been to two vets in Texas City and neither could find out what was wrong. |
have your vet check for thyroid problems and cushings disease to start with. i'm surprised he hasn't already. if those are negative a skin biopsy might be taken to see if something is going on there. |
You might also consider finding a different vet if you have addressed this problem many times with him and he has not done anything to get to the bottom of it. |
