Puppy Deposits....? I've been Looking for a new Yorkie recently, & a playmate for Sassy! :) I've found 2 adorable yorkies from 2 different yorkie breeders in my Area, However, the puppies wont be ready for another week, so they both are asking for deposits. How safe are these? I didnt have to pay a deposit for Sassy, & it makes me really nervous with all these internet scams going on. Whats PROOF that you sent someone money as a deposit? One of the Breeders Lives in Dallas, which is about 3 Hours away from me....She is asking for me to send money through Paypal. This makes me nervous! so PLease educate me on Deposits!!! [if anyone has done them.] Thanks! :D |
Deposits are very common. I had to put one down on Layla. Its so the breeder knows you are coming to get your dog... they dont' want you to say you are buying the dog and then change your mind and they could have sold it to someone else. And for you it makes sure you get the dog you asked for... you've put money down on it to say that you are commited to buying that dog. USually, if for whatever reason the dog cannot be sold (it gets sick) you will get your deposit back. however you cannot back out usually and say you want it back... |
I had to put a deposit down on both Autumn and Blaze, I think most breeders would prefer it that way. I bet it would be safe! |
you almost always have to pay a deposit. I won't hold a puppy without a deposit. What if I did and kept it a few weeks and the person backed out on me? As far as using PayPal, it is safe for you because you have your receipt and if anything goes wrong, you can file a complaint with PayPal. I get all my deposits thru PayPal. |
I used deposits on a couple of my babies, I use pp when ever possiable, Its safe and i have never had a problem:) good luck, and congrats:) |
Deposits aren't unusual. If you agree with a breeder to purchase one of their puppies before they are ready to go home, it seems right to put down a "holding" deposit, especially if there are a lot of interested buyers. I believe we put our deposit down on Mia about about 5 weeks. |
I put a deposit on Layla before she was born. if no girls had been born in the litter i would have gotten my deposit back. |
Deposits are pretty normal. Make sure you get a receipt back and know what the conditions are with the deposit. I wouldn't buy from a breeder that I didn't know well enough to know if I could trust them with a deposit or not. I think it's always good to find a breeder you like first and build a relationship before you purchase a puppy from them. It's so important to feel like you can trust a breeder. Paypal is nice though because you always have the option of filing a dispute if something goes wrong. |
Don't you feel the need to see the breeder first, and check out the parents of the puppy? So many breeders can send you a cute picture and say it's the puppy. Are the breeders listed with YTCA? Don't rush this decision, it's a twenty year commitment. |
I had put a deposit for Bailey but it was a local breeder so I just paid cash and she hand wrote me a receipt but its very common. :) |
I had to place deposits on both Scooter and Maya. Deposits on puppies are very common. I think PayPal is safe........especially if they are reputable breeders. But beware of anyone asking you to send a deposit by Western Union! Yorkies are addicting, just like potato chips....you can't have just one!Good luck in your search! |
I didn't place a deposit when I bought Oliver, but I gladly would have had the breeder asked for one. It not only ensures that you'll be coming to pick up the dog, but it also can give you a feeling of ease knowing that the dog is now yours and the breeder can't turn around and not give him to you. I personally wouldn't put a deposit on a dog I had never seen, though. I'd be much more comfortable buying from a local breeder where you can see both the conditions the puppy is living in as well as the parents. The parents provide great clues as to how your puppy might look and act as it ages and it's good to know that he's being cared for in a good environment rather than in a barn. |

Even though Slade was a rescue I had to put a deposit on him. I did it through money order so I would have the proof I paid and it was cashed. |
