do yorkies get cold? You know how you see little dogs with sweaters? I heard an NPR report last year where a vet said that most dogs don't need them. Cricket, 8 months, has a shorter coat because we keep him in a puppy cut. It's been really warm in Georgia this year, but the last two days we've had a cold kick. He still never wants to come inside and doesn't seem cold, but when he get inside where it's warm, he starts to shiver. What's up with this? Do I need to use the coat we've got him? Also, since he's only 3.5 pounds, we can never ever find one small enough. Cheerio, mayerae23 |
My archie does get cold a lot when he is outside, he would still shiver when wearing a warm coat!! He is 5 months old and about 2.5lbs and I found that the xxs size fits him, I think you should be ok with an xs or maybe even a s (depending on the brand), walmart and petsmart have a good selection of coats and sometimes you can find them at target too (although they sell out pretty quickly). Hope this helps!! |
Seeing as yorkies have hair rather than fur they do feel the cold and heat. Imagine their body as having the same sensations as your head. If you feel the cold, then so do they. Most dogs have fur, with undercoats that keep them warm in the winter, and cooler in the summer, but yorkies have only hair. |
I beleive they do, Its very cold here in mich, I keep my babies in shirts whlile inside and sweaters when they go outside:) my boys dont like them much:rolleyes: My girls are dressed everyday;) the light tanktops work real well for chilly days:) |
Yes I know mine do, and if they Like to dress I see no problem with it.. ;) Welcome to YT:) I am sure you can find a seller here on YT to make a Cute Sweater for you :) |
Mine do. I have hoodies for them for the cooler days |
The key word...is most. Yorkies have single coat hair...not fur. The smaller they are the more suspectiable to the cold. Even my big girl, Ramsey (10 pounds) shivers if she's outside without a sweater or coat. Doesn't even have to be THAT cold....60 degrees...both mine have on sweaters. |
I would think he should wear the coat...he's very small and the smaller ones often get cold easier. Mine also wear sweaters inside because it's chilly even indoors in the winter. How long does he stay outside? |
Yes, they shiver! I feel Zoe and Zorak's feet and sometimes they are chilled! We live in Arizona and keep them in sweaters anytime the highs are under 60 degrees. When we go into stores/resturaunts I keep a blankey with them so that the air conditioning does not chill them. a light tshirt in a very light/white based color is great for reflecting the hot sun on summer days. |
That's great adivice--thanks y'all! I usually don't let him out for very long if it's cold. Another thing we did the one time it snowed here this winter is we would let him run around and play in the snow for a few minutes, then take him inside and wrap him up in a warm towel. I'd just stick the towel in the microwave, and he got all snuggly in there. That dog is seriously spoiled, by the way. |
mine get cold very easily! i always have their sweaters or coat on when we go outside. |
Mine gets cold so much that he shakes so badly. I sometimes had to put him in layers and I make sure we are not out for too long at a time. I can't even stand the cold myself with layers of clothes brrrr... |
yes! Kash is very prone to getting cold. in the mornings, he won't even stay outside long enough to go #2, especially since the grass is wet with dew. he usually stands on three feet. :D i guess he would rather only three feet be in the cold grass than all four! rofl! anyway, he's only 1.5 lbs so hopefully as he grows he'll be able to stand being in the cold for longer. we live in florida so the winters are short! |
When going somewhere with Gypsy, we usu wrap her in a special blanket we got for her. Jimmie will usu wrap her up and carry her under his jacket. |
lacey is 3lbs 2 ozs and for sure does get very cold out side, even with clothes and coats on. the way i look at it i would rather be safe then sorry she cant afford to loose any weight and when they get cold they use their energy to get warm. |
Banjo gets really cold! And he is about 9# now!! Wow! He usually has a hoodie on, and will sleep right in front of the fireplace w/ a fire in it! He shivers if he is out in the cold very long! |
Some dogs can tolerate really cold weather without being uncomfortable. It all depends on several factors. First is how they are raised. If they are raised in a really warm home, then their tolerance to anything under 70 degrees will be low. If the home is kept really cool at about 65 to 66 degrees, then they will be able to handle cooler weather outside. If the dog is an outside dog, it will handle even colder weather. However small dogs do not do well if kept outside when the temps. go down into the 40's and lower. Rule of thumb is.........if your dog shivers, then maybe a coat or sweater would make it feel really good. ;) |
Bailey and I live in Missouri. According to the vet - if I need a coat outside, then Bailey should have a coat. Otherwise, in the house - she's fine without anything. Bailey is 5.1 lbs and loves it outside - she does not shiver. |
Joey's breeder told us, "if you're cold and need a sweater, so does Joey." |
i tried to get Jeremy to buy odie a sweater, and or lol, a hoodie with fur but he said he doesnt need it because we live in FL but maybe next year but jeremy was saying the same thing, "he doesnt need one he's a dog! he has a natural coat" so idk =/ |
I don't think mine would know what hit them if they had to be naked for a day...lol They started wearing clothes the day I got them, so they just got used to it...none of them have ever really minded, and some LOVE their clothes...so I imagine mind would get cold if they didn't wear anything. :p |
