New - 8-9week old yorkie Hi, I'm new to the fourms and been browsing through the internet, but I can not seem to find a straight answer. I have am a pervious dog owner, but this is my first "small breed" dog. Chewy (our yorkshire terrier) is 8 to 9 weeks old. He is being fed Puppy small bites Science Diet. I've asked our vet about this and I am not trying to discrimante his credibility as I've been going to him for years, but he said that a healthy meal for this type of small breed dog would be 15 of the small bits of food. To me this seems extremely small, even for this breed. He explained to me how small there stomach is, but I still can't grasp it. As soon as I will put the food in his bowl he will eat it up extremely fast and be gone in less than 10seconds. I figured this would be a good place from other owners that have experiance with this. Any input on this would be nice. |
Welcome to YT. With a puppy that young, I would free feed. Good luck! |
hi and welcome!!! my yorkie is a year and a half now, so i don't really remember how much we gave her, but i am pretty sure it was more than that... a small handful... i remember my breeder gave me like a little toy tea cup to measure the food in... and i also wanted to let you know that science diet isn't really a good food... i know a lot of vets promote it, but it's not that great, you can do a search here and there are lots of threads about foods... sorry i couldn't be of more help, hopefully one of the breeders will answer to your post soon, good luck! |
Yes, that is about right. at 9 weeks thats pretty much all they need. 15-20 kibbles 3-4 times a day 15 kibbles - 4 times 20 kibbles 3 times thats if they are those really small bites. my roxie is 17 weeks and she is eating orijen fresh fish and those bites are a bit bigger so i give her like 8-10 3 times a day. |

I free feed my 4 little ones(put it down when I get up in the morning, and then pick it up at 5:00), this way they get plenty and they won't over eat if it's down all the time..good luck on your new baby |
:wavey: hi welcome to yt!! |
Welcome to YT, glad to have you. My Vet advised me to feed my babies small quantities 3x a day. I really dont know the quanity or home many kibble to give. But someone on YT will give you some excellent advice. Again Welcome. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! :welcome4: |
First of all welcome to YT.:welcome4: And congratulations on your new little one. You'll have so much fun with a Yorkie even though they do have their moments that make you want to pull your hair out. I'm right now in the middle of changing my furbabies over to Canidae. My three Yorkies get 1/8 c. morning and evening. (Chipper does get a little before bedtime because he throws up bile in the morning if his tummy is empty.) I can't free feed because of my Pommie. Besides having no stop mechanism he inhales so fast that he gets food stuck in his throat. Scares me half to death. I put a small amount of water on his food so it is slippery and doesn't stick in his throat. Anyway, I always wonder if I am feeding enough because 1/8 c. seems such a small amount. But they aren't skinny so I'll stick with this amount. I was interested to read that some count the kibble. That's a good idea. |
Welcome to YT. I free feed Murfee and have since we got him at 8 weeks old. Good luck |
Welcome to YT :) |
Welcome to Yt, your going to absolutely love having a yorkie.. but watch out, they are very additive.. I see you have had lots of information feeding. You might find training the hardest.. but being consistent it the very best way to get one of these little furbutts trained.. Best of luck to you.. |
Welcome to YT...I also free feed..they eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full..that way I know they are content and getting what they need.. Dawn |
hello and welcome to you and ur babies! i have never only fed odie a certain amount of food! i'm a firm believer in not doing that, but thats just me. When he was younger i had smaller dog bowls so the amount was less than it is now obviously but my method: i just fill the bowl up and he eats when hes hungry and he doesnt eat when he's not. hes smart enough to know when to stop (unlike some of us humans lol) so i just fill his bowl up and leave it! hes never had any problems so i feel comfortable enough with the way i feed him. plus i think each owner has their own ways of feeding |
