Where will my dog sleep As most of you know by now, I am getting a 7 month old Yorkie tomorrow. My ten year old sleeps with us in the bed and has been for ten years, she is a Maltese. The Yorkie sleeps in his cage now with the door open, but if I do that he could come in the bedroom and pee on the carpet. Can I put him in his crate and close the door and keep it in my bedroom. Also, I guess when he is in his crate during the day I leave the door open with the water on the outside, right? Thanks. |
Can you put his crate somewhere like laundry room or kitchen and gate it off that way if he potties it can be on a pad or something like that? Bellybands would be an option too for at night. |
Before Loki was housetrained (at least well enough to sleep through the night or wake us up rather than pee on the floor) he slept in our bedroom in a crate. It worked well. He would whine or bang on the side of the crate and we would get up and let him out. Sometimes he and Sammy still sleep in their crates. |
dont you think at 7 months he can hold it till the morning? |
But I need to know if I can close the crate door, so the crate can stay in my bedroom |

I have a water bottle (like a rabbit bottle) that hangs off the out side of the cage and the nozzle goes in the cage so they can drink but not dump their water. |
Thank you very much, he also has the water bottle in the crate. So I will close the door and if he cries I will just have to lay on the floor with him. Thanks again. |

Dim Sum is only 4 months and can hold it from about 11-8. I think those 9 hrs are the limit as the other night I put him away at 10 and he went in the crate about 7 and this morning I woke up at 7 and he had to really go about 15 minutes after letting him out. I've discovered his limit at this point but I think he's really really good. We have very few accidents. |

I put mine on the floor beside my bed! I got one of those little pillows for a crate! and I put a little blankie in there on the colder nights! He is good and almost always goes right to sleep! |
My yorkie slept in a crate on my bed right next to me. He never peed in his crate. I would take him out throughout the night, then as he got older, he held it more and more. Now he sleeps through the night without accidents, and sleeps on my bed. I have carpeting in my room too, but i still have a pee pee pad out for him.....Just in case. =) |
I kept Bailey in a crate next to my bed while potty training. When I was certain that she could hold it all night - I made her a bed from an ottoman and pillows and placed it next to my bed in the corner. The ottoman, a small foot stool to help her up and a small rug on the floor is baby gated from the rest of the room. Its Bailey's room. No water during the night. I take her to potty in the a.m. before I go (I figure her bladder is smaller than mine so she gets priority in the a.m.) |
when i first got morgan at 13 weeks she slept in a small crate just big enough for her to go in, turn around, and lay down. the crate was on the floor right by my bed so i could hear her whine if she needed to be let out (which she did for the first few weeks). By the time she was 7 months she was in an ex-pen that is 6 feet by 2 feet. the pen is in my room ( i have a large room). there is a strong plastic carpet runner underneath it to protect from the rare accident or from water spilling. Her food and water are in there. Plus a blanket to lie on, her house bed, a blanket in her house bed, and a few toys that have the least possibility of her eating or choking on. she is almost 2 now and still sleeps in this same area. occasionally she'll sleep in bed with me like on the weekends, but she LOVES her ex-pen and will gladly sleep in there with no problems. |
Congratulations on getting a new puppy. I say let him sleep with you. We have four sleeping with us on a queen size bed. Anyway, if you can't do that then you could try letting him sleep in his crate if that is what he is used to. I have never kept one in a crate but I know a lot of people do. I hope he is a good boy and adjusts well. |
